Visa Confusion

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have been reading the forum for a while but unfortunately still find the visa info confusing. I am less than 50, am not married to a Thai lady but am fortunate enough that I can afford to stay in Thailand for an extended amount of time.

Based on this scanario, what is the best visa to get. Please assume I will arrive off the plane with the standard 30 day visa. Please dont tell me I have to leave the LOS every month?

Thanks in advance to all.

Regards.

Basically you can stay as long as you want although after 30 days you're illegal so you have to thread carefully.

Thanks Meom,

I am aware of the standard 30 day visa and the overstay rules but what I need are the other options that allow me to stay legally for 90 days or more at a time with the least amount of hassle as possible.

Cheers.

Ming~Ming, you do have a bit of a problem there.

The worst thing to do would be to arrive without visa, you will get 30 days permission to stay and than have to leave and do this every 30 days. Called visa-run.

BTW, you do not mention your nationality but assume one of the 41 countires allowed to stay 30 days without visa.

Get a visa from a consulate near you, (where are you staying, there are easy and difficult missions around the world), some might give you non-immigration O, which allows you to stay 90 days, some non-imm O multiple which allows to come and go as you please within 365 days, each stay 90 days.

Another alternative, a tourist visa with 3 entries. Each entry 60 days can be extented by 30 days, when you have to leave/return. Last entry must be before expiry of the visa (180 days)

Another possibility, buy a government sponsored appartment, must have Baht 3 million. This can only be done with immigration office directly.

Last but not least and I would not recommend: Buy Thailand Elite card, combined with a 5 years visa at Baht 1 million. With this visa you can come and go as you please, or extent in country every 90 days.

I'm only not sure how long this system will survive.

Hi,

Many thanks for the replies and particularly Axel who has have filled in the gaps in my knowledge and answered my immediate queries. Cheers. I am from Ireland (Dublin) by the way so am entitled to the basic 30 day "holiday type" visa. I will be using Koh Samui as a base during my visits to Thailand.

In relation to the visas, if someone could clarify the following questions, I would appreciate it:

Non-immigration O.

Stay 90 days and then exit Thailand.

Q. Can I then re-apply in another neighbouring country for another non-immigration O and get a further 90 days and continue this infinitum?

Q. Is this straightforward or does getting the visa re-issued depend on the mood of the immigration official?

Non-immigration O multiple.

Stay 90 days and then exit Thailand for a day. Re-enter Thailand and visa is automatically stamped for a further 90 days.

Q. At the end of the year, can this type of visa be re-applied for from a neighbouring country or only from your home country?

Tourist visa with 3 entries.

Each entry of 60 days can be extended by 30 days, when you have to leave/return. Last entry must be before expiry of the visa (180 days)

Q. Is this the most common and easily obtainable type of visa?

Q. Do most informed people arrive with non-immigrant O and after this expires use multiple entry tourist visa's?

Many thanks for your time and effort so far with the replies.

Best wishes.

Apply for a multiple entry Non-Immigrant O visa at the Royal Thai Consulate at Hull. You can use the mails. That visa is valid for a full year, and enables stays of up to 90 days on each entry. With judicious use you can stay in Thailand for nearly 15 months. Unfortunately, you are unlikely to get a new one year visa anywhere in the Asian region the following year.
