30 Day At Nong Khai Bridge

I was hoping to get a 30 day stamp at the Nong Khai border from Laos in a few days. It had slipped my mind about onward tickets. I have a British passport and can go get a visa in Vientiene if I must, but prefer not to if possible. I am currently on holiday in Laos further north. I had a Thai tourist visa before leaving Thailand last week. Could someone pass on the latest for me please.
