I think all names in the poll are completely ancient. Come on, you're naming a daughter, not a granny.

I haven't even MET a 'Mali' in 10 years. The other ones are almost equally stale. You can do MUCH better!

As an aside, I know it's not common to name kids after their parents/grand parents, but it's still an option to grab at least part of the name of a parent or grandparent (on either side). Then just morph it into something Thai.

Note that there's Thai baby naming sites out there; come on!

So wheres your ideas then. Believe me i have searched on the tinternet and keep finding the same 6 or 7 names. The ones i have picked sound the most unusual to me.

Jasmin/Jasmina/Jasmine - great names if you see your daughter living in a trailer, lap dancing the day shift. Not much better than Bambi, Star, Cheetah, and Summer etc

For giggles all round Tittiporn (shortened to teats) is a winner. Not sure on the spelling the Thai's use. Anything ending in 'porn' has potential.

Nattaya - as others have said is a bad call. Too close to Pattaya. On the plus side though I had a brief recollection of Natt Chanapa / Nong Natt.

Sorry none of those names really grab me to be honest, but you need to pick something you and your better half love. Does it need to be/sound Thai/exotic?

Sometimes the simple Kate, Sarah, etc names are the best. Less tendency to go in and out of vogue.

I found the chapter on children's names in Freakonomics interesting reading if you get a chance - basically the author claims that people attach various stereotypes/assumptions to certain "exotic" names, though the author was more arguing that Black Americans with names that screamed "Black American" were disadvantaged, due to people deliberately or subconciously making judgements based on their name, socio-economic background, education etc. We all probably do it to a degree.

I voted "other". I have heard a few really good names of some of the young girls at our Thai temple, but I can't remember them at this time. I do, however, remember my daughter's name that I like more than any on your list. Her name is Ariya.

Named one of my daughters Annika. Works both in Thai and "insert most Western countries".

I have a friend who's daughter is called Pattida (sorry, don't know the proper spelling, or meaning) which suits her. When she was born her mum in Thailand called daddy up and said that she wanted to call her CXXtida. He soon put her off that idea!!! She is now 3.5 and has a wee sister called Vanessa and the whole family are here on holiday. Oh happy days...

I voted for Mali too, though if I had another daughter (I have 3 already! - Cherry, Jessica & Fiona), I would probably go for Tara. Thais have trouble with more than 2 syllables, and prefer just one! Hence my daughters are actually Li, Jet & Na.

Sassyprapa, Supreeyawadee and Pornchita are my favorites. They are always the students with the best personalities in my classes. They are a bit exotic I know that is why, I suppose, Thais have nicknames.

Mali - just get to be quite common nowadays for a farang-thai daughter, and not so preferable for even most thai-thai couples.

I like the name that can be interchangeable when either living in Thailand or in the west, and easy to pronounce by thais

It's probably too late but I like Kannika too - that's our friend's girl's name and it somehow suits her really well.

Our daughter's name is Daau, pronounced like "Dow", star in Thai - spelled phonetically in my language (not English ). That's a nice name too...
