The latter specifically refers to me flying the airplane. Are both correct?

2.ผมชอบเวลาผมขับเครื่องบินเพราะว่ามันทำผมรู้สึกเป็นอิสระ

I think this sentence sounds strange.

May sound better.

Or maybe just

ผมชอบ(การ)ขับเครื่องบินเพราะว่ามันทำผมรู้สึกเป็นอิสระ

I like flying an airplane (as a pilot) because it makes me feel free

In English -ing is added to a verb is done for several reasons.

1. for indication on ongoing action:

For instance: I am flying

2. for changing a verb into an action

For instance: Flying is fun

1. In the first case you would use กำลัง in Thai.

ผมกำลังบิน

2. In the second case I would add การ in front of the verb in Thai

การบินสนุก

Kris I am a native English speaker, and I'm not sure about like!

Though I think you are correct that it requires an object (at least in writen form, in todays spoken language it is one of the most abused words there are, stuck in in all manners and parts of speech).

As I've learned Thai so far, I agree that ชอบ requres an object as well. That's why I'd prefer to use ผมชอบกานบิน which makes sense to me, but I was corrected to use ผมชอบเวลาผมขับเครื่องบิน

There is a difference in meaning. The latter refers to piloting an aeroplane.

The first one is more general. I am not sure if my sense is correct here, but it sounds a bit to me like it would mean flying like Superman... which I guess your teacher is not convinced you can do.

To be specific, you would say นั่งเครื่องบิน for travelling by air as a passenger, and ขับเครื่องบิน if you are piloting the plane.

I also thought it should be ทำให้ . But when I asked a Thai person she said ทำ was better. Then I asked another Thai person and she said it should be ทำให้. The second person said เวลาที่ is better than เวลา.

Explaining your own language seems to be hard if you were never taught to do that.
