My dog got a "cold" the Vet said, as my dog was coughing and has very watery eyes. I left him with the vet for a week to get better.

By the next week of anibiotics the cough was gone but his eye balls turned white/jelly looking with 2cm holes in the center! The doctor says he thinks the dog has either "dry eyes" and the dog must have scratched them... hmm. My dog is a Lhasa Apso and is 3 years old. He can see now but not very far... Never had any eye problems at all before this.

Now after 3 weeks of eye drops every 2-3 hours (Saline eye wash, antibiotic eye drops, and a cream) he does not seem better...

Any ideas on what this might be?

Can it be an ulcer on the eyeball? Bulky eyed dogs are prone to damage to the eyes.

Better ask/pm Bambina or Mangotogo!

Wish you good luck!

Could be chronic conjunctivitis or

Keratitis: (corneal opacity) which can be caused by, among other things, roundworm larvae in the eyes or by draughts. Another cause is entropion i.e. a turning in of the eyelids which, I think, Lhasas are prone to. Corneal opacity is serious and cause should be established and specific cure prescribed.

Glaucoma: The early signs are identical to conjunctavitis and Keratitis but diagnostic feature is bulging of the affected eye with a clouding over of the entire surface.

Entropion: see above. Operation will turn eyelids back to normal position.

Blocked tear duct: Can occur secondary to conjunctavitis or any of the other eye conditions.

Dry eye: In early stages identical to conjunctavitis - a catarrhal discharge and a running eye. True dry eye does not respond satisfactorily to treatment and some keratitis develops. Whenever kerato-conjunctavitis fails to respond to treatment, dry eye should always be suspected. Vet will prescribe artificial tear drops and antibiotic ointment.

You need to quickly find a decent vet. In the meantime keep the dog away from draughts.

I had a Lhasa who had an eye problem all his life and it was quite a job dealing with it.

Above info is from the TV Vet Dog Book. Do hope it is helpful.

Sounds to me that ulceration has taken place but that will heal with treatment tho dog will probably be left with 'dimple' on the eyeball.

OMG

Can you pick your dog to Bkk? Chulalongkorn Animal Hospital has "eyes clinic"

From the pic..

It's abit entropian but i think it's 2nd problem. It's not glauacoma . For corneal opacity (is a kind of scar or cell infiltration) is not a desease. It's a sign

Well, I am in Pattaya.. a sign of what? How bad is this? Will it heal or get worse? I hate to see him suffer like this..

Well, I think you had better bring your dog to Bkk.

I think you need to know there is a wound in your dog's eyes or not.

The Opth Vet will do some test.

They will give you some eyes drop as antibiotic (every 2-3 hrs) and other eyes drop as cyclosporin and etc.

Tablets may include antibiotic, Vitamin A+C

If there is no wound in the eye, you may receive steroid+antibiotic eyes drop

There is an obvious "hole/wound in the center of each eye surrounded by that white jellylooking surface of the eyeball.

He has been on Poly-Oph, Exocin, saline drops and Lacryvisc gel for weeks.... Why would there be little to no improvement?

Getting to BKK is a bit difficult but if I really have to I will. The big Muang Ake animal hospital here in Pattaya is where I have been going for the last month for this...

usual treatment for corneal ulcers... atropin in the eye at night to keep pupil open and do at night so dog isnt light sensitive, vulteran drops (for pain), and liquid antibiotics phenimicin four times day NO STEROIDS ; if that doesnt work, they sew the third eyelid shut for a week or so... to allow healing.

the testing is a flourescent colour stick smeared in the eye and checked with a uv light to see where the ulceration is.

lhasas are prone...

anyway, our boxer (who had recurring ulcers ) was recommended to use liquid tears kind of stuff to keep eye moist due to protrubing eye and recurring ulcers... the thrid eyelid thingy went on for three weeks; second time round, we started drops right away and didnt go thru the whole thing again...

OFF TOPIC SORT OF;

we are interested in a lhasa female for our male, FOOFOO. non can be had in israel (there are 35 registered, two main breeders, and no litters yet).... willing to take adult female....

I WILL SEND THE EYE PICS TO MY FAVE VET, BUT DONT KNOW WHEN HE WILL OPEN HIS MAIL NEXT...

Thanks for the info too! I'll try to keep at it and go back to the hospital again.... all other info will be helpfull too! Both of his eyes went from perfect to this in just 7 days! Seeing him suffer these last three weeks is horrible! (and 10,000bht in vet bills)

Pic of Natty just before getting sick....

I had an idea that there is a vet eye clinic in BKK - vet in Pattaya said my dog would have to go there if no improvement.

But you could try Nuern Plub Warn Animal Hospital, Tel 038 406 384 - 5 or mobile 081 437 9620. I have always found the lady vets there very good but like when I can see the boss Dr Padet (a man).

Thinking of you and Natty.

Looking at the pic's it makes me wonder if something as gone loose inside of the eyes. There is a technical word for this, but can't recall what it is. VET'S!!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!

Anyway, I second Bambina's 'OMG!!!!' and as obviously the treatment doesn't work' get him to BKK as soon as possible.

I'm really sorry for you and your dog. This must be an enormous stressful nad painful situation for you, seeing that something is terribly wrong but till now nothing really works.

Wish you again good luck!
