I have an HP monitor (not flat screen) that came with the model: HP Pavilion a50801 home PC, which I purchased 14 months ago. Similar to the monitor pictured below.

A week ago the monitor menu began appearing on the screen. Tried pressing all the buttons on the monitor. Worked temporary than the menu appeared again.

Now the menu is permanently flashing on the screen. If I turn off the monitor power and switch on again, makes no difference.

This is what I have tried so far:

Switching the monitor off all night.

Pulled my monitor apart. Gave it a wipe down and sprayed with contact cleaner. Put it all back together, and plugged in. Cured the problem for a couple of hours than the menu appeared again.

Tried re-setting the controls by switching off the monitor power. Than held down the menu button and the exit button at the same time and while holding, switched the monitor power back on. Once on, pressed in the menu button and when menu appeared, switched off the menu by pressing in the menu button again. This cured the problem for an hour. After which the same tactic no longer worked.

At my wits end, does anyone have any ideas or had a similar experience with a monitor?

Sounds like sticky buttons or buggered electronics.

Try the retailer to see if they will do anything for you (unlikely to be free after 14 months).

If the monitor has an auto setup button - leave that in place and remove the rest ?

If you can work on the monitor safely (Only you know if you understand the risks and safe working practices involved in working on montiors that have high voltages even when turned off and unplugged from the mains electrical supply.) disconnect the front panel 'keyboard' and see if that is causing the problem.

You mention contact cleaners - has the monitor suffered a spillage in it's past?

The monitor does not have any reset buttons, not ones that I can see anyway.

I have already striped down the monitor and cleaned everything.

I use a very good contact cleaner that comes in a spray can and have used this on the control buttons. There has never been anything spilt on the monitor and the menu problem is the first problem I have had with the monitor.

It does seem that in the end I will have to take the monitor into a repairer, but was hoping to be able to sort it out myself saving a load of inconveinience.

Appears all the geniuses are away on holiday this week.

The flashing menu problem was driving me insane, so today I took the monitor to the Computer Plaza in Chiang Mai for repair.

The problem was a dry socket on the circuit board. A 3 hour job, cost 500 baht.

Now all is back to normal, end of story.
