Hi computer buffs,

I dont know if this has been asked before, but lately when i have tried to sign into web sites like Facebook and Myspace the home pages always show the German language. Since i am based in Bangkok i could imagine the pages showing in Thai, but why on earth German. I have not changed any settings in IE and i dont have any spyware problems. Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening. By the way i dont have anything against Germans but i dont understand the language.

Cheers, Rick

No any problem with that. Just open both page and they came up in English.

Hi Reimar,

Thanks for the help. I believe that you get the sites in English but on 2 occasions tonight i get them in German. Very strange. Anyway i suppose i will have to live with it. I have checked everything in IE and all is ok.

Maybe your PC agrees with your signature. By the by since you didn't provide any responses did you try the ip geo location page suggested by niller74?

Use an DNS Server instead an Proxy! May use Open DNS: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

AOL is the answer, but I'm not 100% sure of the question :o I didn't even know they still offered a browser. I thought that had died years ago.

Looks like there is some background routing going on, maybe Germany is the nearest AOL gateway? If I were you I'd look to use IE7 or Firefox, unless you have some pressing need for AOL. If so look at the internet settings, though if you've not changed anything {nor had an update} I'm puzzled as to why it has suddenly started doing this.

OK AOL won't show you in Thailand, though I understand how it's getting Germany {and for that matter the Thaivisa linked service} since the DiggMyIp lookup table says Germany owned by AOL, and I've just checked the ip address through two other main services and they both show it as US.

Hi A Traveller,

I have used AOL for many years as it was once the best ISP in the UK. My business e mail is with AOL and i am loathed to lose so i keep paying the subscriptions even though i have been in Thailand for the past 8 years. The browser is very good by the way and i prefer it to IE.

Just for your info i have also hed the German sites showing on IE when i check google for example so i dont think that it is the AOL browser alone.

Maybe i should just syudy German and call it a day ha ha!

Thanks for the suggestions.

I believe your condo is using some proxy or anternate routing. I cannot give you any better answer.

OK the position is that some geo lookups, presumably the one being used by the service the condo {maybe True's itself} shows this IP address as residing in Germany belonging to AOL, {again as does the Thai Visa lookup} other geo lookup services show it as US located belonging to AOL. In short there's a discrepancy between the lookups which, of course, shouldn't happen. I'm not sure how to resolve it, since we don't know where the lookup is occurring, e.g. condo or True.

One option would be to add the OpenDNS settings to your system.

Regards

PS IF the system is not set to obtain DNS settings automatically {that'll make sense when you look at the instructions on the OpenDNS site} remember to make a note of the addresses before you change them, in case you need to reset.

A quick search on google learned me that the IP adress 195.93.60.71 is one of AOL's proxies. Every AOL user will be routed through a proxy, sometimes causing big problems. How you - living in Thailand - end up on their network is not very clear to me, I suppose that the fact that you still pay for your old subscription and still use their software has everything to do with it. If you are really considered as an AOL user, there is no way to get rid of it, except disabling/removing all AOL stuff. Open DNS is a good thing to have on your computer, but I'm 100 % sure it will not solve the problem.

But : did you notice this strange behavior before ? If you have a German IP adress, also Google (as you already found out ) and Yahoo should be in German ! I can hardly imagine that you never noticed this before :D If you have these problems only as from today, my guess would be that you changed something in your system, something which has to do with your AOL mail probably. Try to remember what you did the last 24 hours and undo it.

The one million dollar question is of course if this situation is good for you. Having a German proxy is something a lot of people are willing to pay for, why I am not allowed to discuss on this forum :D Zattoo.com should work, so you should be able to watch some exciting German TV also. Consider this as a bonus :o

But all your traffic will be routed over a German server, which can slow down your internet if the sites you normally use are located in Asia or the US. Maybe it's worthwhile to run a couple of speedtests and - if possible - compare them with tests you did before.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your input. I do pay for AOL and i dont want to get rid of it as i use AOL messenger to contact my family and i also have multiple AOL mail addresses. I have seen these german web sites before but never on yahoo which is my home page. I agree that when i use AOL it is slower than IE, but it has never been a major problem. AOL say that you can access their services whilst abroad so long as you pay the minimum fee which is what i do.

Maybe i should consider using AOL web mail through IE to get my mail, buit saying that i have had German langusge site when using IE, but AOL has been running at the same time.

Thanks again,

Cheers, Rick

It's becoming clear now : you are an official AOL subscriber, and since AOL tunnels all his traffic through a proxy, it is normal that they do it with you too. (did not know that the service was available from Thailand) Unfortunately for you, you have a German proxy :o My suggestion is to contact their helpdesk, and ask them how to change it into a proxy you like more. I think it should not be a big problem, probably just adjust a setting in their browser .

For your IE : did you already checked if it uses a proxy (tools-->internet options-->connections-->LAN settings). The "proxy box" should be unchecked.

Good luck !

The oddity here is that the geo lookup tables are out of synch, giving different locales, which as I noted is not supposed to occur. My guess is something has gone wrong with a table update, and that probably the US location is the valid one. AOL should be able to confirm if this 'proxy' is in Germany or not, and that answer may clear matters up too.

This is an odd one, though with everything going on with the updates to effectively every DNS server within the Internet I do wonder if there could be some anomalies occurring, since patching started before today's publicity.

The 195.93.0.0/17 network is owned by AOL International Operations, Europe. You are using an AOL browser, and get routed through their proxies, which I find a bit odd. But since they are trying to transition into an advertising based company, this likely has something do with them wanting to control your internet traffic (i.e. being able to track everything you do and feed you their ads).

The fact that you were routed through Europe is probably due to network issues at AOL, so you were routed through Europe instead of across the Pacific, and ended up getting pegged as a German surfer. I wouldn't worry as it's likely temporary.

The best thing to do in such instances is just start up IE, FireFox, Opera, or whatever browser you have and use that when there appears to be problems with AOL's routing.

Thanks for your input guys. I am now using open DNS but i really can't see any benefits to this. Can someone please explain briefly in laymans terms as to what the benefits are?
