A friend of mine went to Laos via Mukdahaan then entered Thailand through Nong Kai. He said they stamped his car through but there were no stamps on his passport. He went today to Mukdahaan to extend his visa, where he realised there was no stamp. They have told him to go to Nong Kai to get the stamp and given some letter.

It sounds like a scam to me. Does anyone have any advice? I suppose he'll have to pay 20,000 baht as he is over 1 month overstayed as THEY "forgot" to stamp his passport.??

Did your friend just forget to stop by Immigration at Nong Khai after processing his car papers?  If so, then reckon he's also missing his Arrival Card, which might have had a stamp on it.

Doubt if it's a scam.  However, the advice about returning to Nong Khai Immigration office (probably the larger office several km south of the bridge office on the bypass road) sounds fairly reasonable.  He should be sure to take along his car papers that'd hopefully show the date of retirn to Thailand.

Along with the car papers, dated, also hope his passport includes the Lao EXIT stamp which should be the same date.
