My husband (Thai) and I are planning our third trip together to Canada this December. We would like to stop in the US on the way, for a couple of days to visit my father. With ticket prices increasing I would like to apply for his US visa now so we can buy our tickets ASAP.

Does anyone know if there is a cap to how early you can apply?

Just checked my Thai wife's passport for her intitial tourist visas, 15 years ago. Things might, hopefully, be the same now.  FYI, she's now on her 2nd 10 year visa.

Anyway, both  of the older visa were issued with a six (6) month validity period, eg, could enter the U.S. anytime before the expiry of the visa, which was six months from when it was issued.

You could send them an email and ask:

"The non-immigrant visa unit does not take calls from individuals wishing to make interview appointments or to discuss visa cases. For general inquiries relating to non-immigrant visas, please contact [email protected]."

Here's the info on the NIV process:

http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/non-immigrant_visas.html

Note: Due to security considerations, there is no information window for walk-in visitors at the Embassy. Only those with scheduled interviews will be admitted to the consular section

Have "fun" in Canada, during December??

Thanks very much Mac! I have sent them an email, thought maybe I could get a quicker response this way :o

We are going at Christmas to purposely see if he can withstand a Canadian prairie winter, he has already seen summer and fall so this is the next step! God help him, as I am from one of the coldest cities in Canada!

There is a very good chance they wiil issue a 3 month single entry visa the first time. Equally good chance they will go ahead and give the standard 10 year multi entry.

If you are going in December, now is probably a good time to apply, by the time your husband gets the interview, is will be Sept and a 3 month will work.

When applying, remember to emphasize your ties to Thailand and your husbands ties to you. Joint bank accounts, your long term visa, WP, etc.

Also, while I have your attention

We live in the South, would it benefit him if I went with him to the interview? Do they want to interview me as well? I doubt it as the Canadian embassy never wanted to. And I suppose they only interview Monday-Friday?

Well, yes, go with him to the interview, you might be asked some Qs, or not.  The four times my wife went I went with her, I was the one asked the Qs, not her, 1992, 1993, 1995, and 2006.   The ConOff wanted to see my house lease, first time, last time passport with multiple retirement extensions of my Non-O visa.  I also had the chanotes for land, house, car registrations (2), tambien ban, bank account books, etc, even a few magazines received from the U.S. here.  All counts.
