Kawthuang Visa Run

Featured Replies

Im doing the burma visa run one of the days and wondered if its worth spending a night there?

Is there anything of interest? beach? bars?

No, no and no!! However, spend 1 night to see for yourself. It's a pretty wretched place.

A few months back i followed one of my friends on his visa run there and we had a nice time in Kawthaung.

In time for sunset, there are a couple of pleasant open-air restaurants very near the coastline and immigration pier where you can enjoy some munchies while enjoying the fresh evening air and lovely view.

After that, my buddy and I had a look around the area and found a couple of small but friendly bars/karaokes with nice hostesses.

If it is a relaxing time/night out you are after, then i would recommend staying over-night. If however, it is a pulsating nightlife you want, then stay away. I thought the town was more than all right for chilling out.

Get off the beaten track though, in the event you can't find any bars, then just ask one of motorbike-taxi lads, and you'll be there in a shot. The folk there at the bars we went too, where really amiable. Worth checking out.

A handful of amazing temples, friendly locals and Beer Myanmar! Not quite as good as Beer Lao, but not bad at all. I have fond memories of some Burmese hip-hop karaoke sung in a coffee house before an admitedly mild night out on the town (nothing like the Thai nightlife!) Not much by way of beaches.

Most visa-runners don't bother and wouldn't even want to, but I had a great experience.

Bottom line, in my opinion, yes, worth one night, but not two. Just have one of the touts at the border take you to the hotel, then show you around. They really are good tour guides, and most people I met spoke fluent Thai, so it was easy to communicate.
