Officials stepped in and checked on the cause of a collapse of rock off a limestone island, locally called ‘Khao Lak’ in Krabi’s Ao Luek district after the incident happened on August 19th. It was confirmed that there was no wind or big waves during the time of the collapse. It is estimated that the middle core of the island which is thinner and got degraded by the water, could not handle the weight on top, so it collapsed. The incident drew vast attention from locals and tourists. The Tourism Authority of Thailand, Krabi Office Director, Pornprapa Lorsuwan, said if the explanation of the cause was left too long, it would affect tourism and said the responsible agency had to come up with clear explanation of the actual cause.
