I have been offered some regular freelance work with a television network but first I need to get a work permit which the production company don't give out right away, it is a three step process, the first of which requires me to get a non imm b visa.

My first question is:

My boss says she can write me a letter to give to immigration which is what I will need to get a non imm b but is skeptical that I can get one from Vientiene and says that KL is the best place to get one without going to Brisbane or UK.

Can I get one from Laos or KL, which is better and is a letter from the company employing me enough? I will need the Non Imm B to get a press pass/work permit.

If you want a Non-B in SE Asia:

Non-Immigrant Visa Category "B" (Business Visa) is issued to applicants who wish to enter the Kingdom to work or to conduct business.

- Evidence of adequate finance (20,000 Baht per person and 40,000 Baht per family).

- Letter of approval from the Ministry of Labour. To obtain this letter, the applicant's prospective employer in Thailand is required to submit Form WP3 at the Office of Foreign Workers Administration, Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour Tel. 02-2452745, or at the Provincial Employment Office in his or her respective province. More information is available at

www.doe.go.th/workpermit/index.html

- Copy of Work Permit issued by the Ministry of Labour and alien income tax or Por Ngor Dor 91 (only in the case where applicant has previously worked in Thailand).

- Corporate documents of hiring company in Thailand such as:

1) business registration and business license

2) list of shareholders

3) company profile

4) details of business operation

5) list of foreign workers stating names, nationalities and positions

6) map indicating location of the company

7) balance sheet, statement of Income Tax and Business Tax (Por Ngor Dor 50 and Por Ngor Dor 30 of the latest year)

8) value-added tax registration (Por Por 20)

- Document indicating the number of foreign tourists (for tourism business only), or document indicating export transactions issued by banks (for export business only).

N.B.

- An alien who receives a Non-Immigrant visa can work in Thailand once he or she is being granted a work permit. An alien in violation of the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979) concerning taking up employment without work permit or the Royal Decree B.E. 2522 (1979) concerning holding employment in certain restricted occupations and professions shall be prosecuted and imprisoned or fined, or shall face both penalties.

- It is recommended that the applicant should apply for visa at the Thai Embassy/ Consulate in the country where he/she has the residence;

Okay, well obviously I can't provide a work permit as I need the Non Imm B to obtain one, which is the catch 22 that puts most people off.

How about if we don't go by the book? I was once told by a Thai lawyer that there are always ways of doing things to obtain what you want and that Thailand is a place where very little would get done if everybody followed the rule book. As we all know, the law is grey and it's flexible - so what's the best way of getting what I need?

From personal experience I would say Vientiene Laos is one of the worst

places to go because they are so tough to deal with. from what I have read,Hull in the UK would be

possible with minimal documentation.

You can apply for WP on any visa or even visa exemption stamp.

You only need to bring with you WP3 (receipt that you have applied for WP)

Well my visa situation is that I am on a 30 day extension I got from immigration, I have about 25 days left. I need to get a new passport this week also, how can I get a WP3? The work permit will be supplied by the company but only after I have proved it worth their while, in the meantime I need to get the next best thing which is a press pass. To get this I need a Non Imm B and there must be a way to get one without having to go to UK or Australia, or is there?

the work permit is provided from the labour departement, the company has nothing to do with it, the decision to grant it is also at the discretion of the labour departement.

tell your employer to consult this list http://122.154.5.7/workpermit/main/wp/wp3.asp and provide ALL the documents to the labour departement PRIOR your request of non-B in a consulate, you'll receive a WP3 recept wich is one of the papers required by the consulate(someone gave a list few replys ago).

You actually need a Non-Immigrant 'M' Visa to gain media accreditation ( through MFA not Immigration ) The TV network should well know the rules.

Cheers Pat - can I obtain that from Suan Plu Immigration with a company letter? If not, what will I need paperwork wise?

the same papers as the non-b PLUS the media license copu i guess.

considering your situation, have a meeting with your future employer and make sure they give the phone calls to labour/consulate/anything, after all it's their job to provide you the appropriate paperwork, for the translation they won't need it as it's their own language and they are the only one to be able to provide the papers.

once this is done, come and post the results, we can't do more for you until you meet your employer.

For an extension of Permission to stay on the basis of media business activities, you apply to immigration under under section 7.11 of National Police Order 606/2549
7.11 In the case of performing media's business activities.

Permitted for not more than 30 days per visit but shall not exceed 90 days in total

(1) The foreigner must obtain permit stamp for the temporary entry and

(2) Certified by and request from Public Relation Department or Department of Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs

1. Petition Forms

2. Copy of Passport of the Applicant

3. Copy of Working permit.

4. Certified letter from either the Public Relation Department or Department of Information, Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting to stay.

So you definitely need to first apply for the Work Permit; second, go abroad to apply for the non immigrant B visa, then third get the work permit. Only then could you apply for an extension at your local immigration dept.
