corkscrew Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I ran out of olives today and I wanted to send our maid to Tops to get some but she did not know "Olives".....and I didn't have the Thai/English dictionary. So I typed in 'olives' on GOOGLE images and up came every variation. I pointed to the one I wanted....and now I have my olives.

desi Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 I use thai2english.com with my maid. After we add the new words to a spreadsheet, she'll put me through my Thai paces. Sometimes I remember... sometimes not... For those who don't want to learn Thai and can't get on google, there's a travel book called Point It. "Help is finally at hand for frustrated tourists in London who don't speak a word of English or Brits abroad who are too lazy to learn the language. Instead of struggling with awkward pronunciations, all you have to do, thanks to a revolutionary picture guide-book called Point It, is to point to a picture of what you want."
ukrules Posted August 29, 2008 Posted August 29, 2008 There's loads of useful things you can do with google directly. It works as a calculator and will convert currencies, temperatures, weights, etc A search for '5200 baht in UK Pounds' actually tells you how much 5200 baht is worth in UK Pounds above the search results. Similar results can be obtained for temperatures '31.4 degrees celsius in fahrenheit' gives you the correct result. I came across this by accident - maybe everyone else already knew about it !

I don’t mean to sound so cynical but even though your new found treasure is really neat I personally don’t find it too practical. I tried the Celsius to Fahrenheit example that you stated and although it worked just fine it took me longer to type all that in then it would if I went to my favorite conversion webpage and made one tab selection and typed in the ’31.4’.. As for the currency conversion I wonder where they get the rates from. Tonight I took 20k baht out of the ATM, I looked at my bank statement just a bit ago and it was approximately $588 USD… Using the Google method you stated it told me it would be $620 USD... That’s quite a bit off target.

That’s quite a bit off target. You can type 31.4 C in F and it does the right thing. When I just typed 20000 THB in USD, it returned $591.36. From http://finance.google.com/finance?q=USDTHB...mp;meta=hl%3Den it looks like there was a slide in the dollar today. The Google calculator is fun to play with, try "speed of light in fathoms per fortnight", or more useful, "4.00 USD per gallon in THB per liter" to compare the price of gas in the US to that in Thailand.

You're right Dave, I put the shorter version in 'xx.x C in F' and it came back with the correct answer. Likewise today when I did the 20k baht conversion to the USD I got $585 USD.... Much closer to the truth... I didn't really play around with it too much since I was already set in my old ways for doing conversions. Now that you have enlightened me on this more simplified approach I might start using it more... Thanks!

dingdongrb Posted August 30, 2008 Posted August 30, 2008 I don't if it works for other countries but for the USA if you type in a phone number 'xxx-xxx-xxxx' it will most times reply back with name and street address for that listing. (I do believe that the number needs to be publically listed.)
