Sitting here on my London canal boat, it struck me that I have never heard of any farangs living on board boats in Bangkok - either moored on the Chao Praya or on/off a khlong somewhere. I've seen the working barges on the river with entire families of Thais aboard and the small poor houseboats on the backwaters alongside Makasan railway. Obviously living on the main khlongs is out, with a mini tsunami every five minutes when the water taxis speed by, but are there any westernized residential moorings/marinas (water/electricity etc.) in Bangkok or anywhere else along the river?

Might be cool to take a cruise all the way up to Chiang Mai. Is it navigable all the way (I did the Ayuttaya cruise a while ago) and what licences/qualifications might one (a foreigner) need? (None required here in the UK for rivers/canals)

I tried searching for 'houseboat' - but that gets flooded with posts about floating hotels and 'liveaboard' searches are swamped with scuba posts.

Cheers,

K.
