Report: Bangkok syndicate fixed World Cup match

A Bangkok-based gambling godfather bribed players and fixed a 2006 World Cup match between Brazil and Ghana, a Canadian investigative journalist has charged.

The writer Declan Hill made the charge on Saturday to the German magazine Der Spiegel.

His book entitled The Fix is to be released this week and will carry further details, he said. The book, published by McClelland & Stewart, is to go on sale in Canada and the United States on Tuesday.

The Spiegel report provided no names of those involved in the alleged match-rigging and "a betting godfather in Bangkok".

But Hill told the magazine his research had shown that an Asian syndicate wanted Ghana to lose the quarter-final match by at least two goals. Brazil went on to win 3-0 in Dortmund.

He said that during three years of research he had learned that a former Ghana international had acted as middleman between Ghana's players and the head of the alleged betting Bangkok-based syndicate.

German football authorities have taken Hill seriously enough that they are to investigate his claim that two German Bundesliga matches may also have been fixed.
