Fire Wire

Featured Replies

I have a plug on the back of my computer, it looks like an Ethernet plughole but is square one end and round at the other. It has FIRE WIRE stamped on the bracket which slots into the motherboard.

What is it??

Colin

It is a high speed serial port created by Apple (IEEE 1394 standards) originally for transferring data from digital camcorders and professional audio systems. Most digital camcorders come with this interface. There are other devices now that use it such as an external drive box (USB & Firewire connections).

Many modern mainboards come with Firewire as standard. Some are integrated connectors like the USB fixed ports on the back, some are a plate that attaches to the back in position of one of the PCI slots and plugs into a connector on the mainboard. My computer has both, one fixed to the mainboard on the back and one on my case front panel next to my USB ports and audio ports.
