Mrs. Lannaman is quite knowedgeable about this sort of thing. She says there is a shrub called Salaid Pangporn which snakes will not come near. Not sure about the spelling of Salaid, but you could ask for the plant at a garden centre, and I'm sure they would know it. I'll have to get some of its leaves to put in my boots! See photo.

Perhaps lannaman is a lot younger than us and went to school in a more politically correct time when Kipling was banned from innocent young eyes along with other "racists" and "imperialists".
