Which Plants Make For Good Houseplants?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I want to scatter plants around the interior of my home. In living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Which plants are the best for indoors?

I have quite a few windows and I don't want the hassle of having to take them out to sit in the sun every few days so I need plants that grow well with ambient sunlight. I want to hang one or two, have a few big ones sit in a big pot on the floor and a few smaller ones to place on tables.

If there are ones that smell good even better but not necessary, I just think plants really liven up a room. Are there any plants that serve any purposes besides just looking good too? Like maybe one that helps to repel mosquitoes or one that helps the oxygen rate in a room.

Any suggestions please and if you have a pic that would be great too.

Thanks.

No pics but if you live handy to Asia Books they have a good selection or search Amazon.com (books) for "Houseplants" :o

Whenever we have had pot plants indoors they usually end up full of ants. That end up all over the house.

We now keep plants outside.

True :o

There is so many that will live indoors to mention. Here's a few that will work.

Thanks for that meandwi.

I of course recognize the 1st pic as an ivy which I love but do any of the others flower?

The first photo is a "Pothos", and can live from cuttings in a bottle of water. The second is a "janet craig Draceana", a good low light plant. The third is a peace lilly and does get a beautiful bloom. The last is a "lady palm".

African violets, orchids, anthiriums will bloom in a window. But beware of the ants. Keep a tray under the pots with a little water in them to prevent this. Most plants bloom 6 to 8 weeks after the previous bloom falls off, so rotating these plants from a balcony to indoors is recommended for indoor blooms.

If it's color your looking for, choose plants with colorful leaves, like a crotan or a Ti plant. They need alot of light. so keep close to a window.

All these plants are available at most local nurseries.
