saw the funniest thing in the world today - it was some Thai drama that had a few dark skinned roles and instead of finding dark skinned actresses they took the normal light skin actresses and had them put on this obvious looking tanning lotion that made them look like reverse Micheal Jackson's

i guess just find stuff like this funny although i know it will make some of you angry

This almost sounds like a "Victor Victoria" moment...a dark skinned person whose skin has been trashed by all the whitening chemicals, then had more darkening chemicals applied. This smacks of Thai racism/classism...as usual.

It's a step forward for those dramas that they even had some dark skinned roles other than the maid. :o

Do you mean like the "Black & White Minstrel Show", in which no "black" people were used (for some strange reason)? Racism makes perfect economic sense...hire a white skinned person (& pay them more) & then colour their skin black (dark). How ludicrous. Then again, people who think like this can't actually think anyway.

On the other hand, maybe they couldn't find any dark skinned actors/actresses with appropriate acting skills...because of their racist policies (not employ dark skinned people)?

My opinion, the E.G. is getting a little carried away. For example, what if the character is dyeing of cancer, does the movie industry now need to find someone that is actually dyeing of cancer to play the role? Or if the character is pregnant, deaf, retarded etc.... does the industry now have to fit this too in real life?

As for myself, I can't wait to see the movie "Tropic Thunder." But I imagine it will be too taboo for E.G., but as for, I can find the humor in it.

Enough to not get too riled up. But I am not too ignorant to believe for a second that Thailand is not "racist." This I am "down with" for sure.

saw that before, nothing new. remember also a meta special about the actress in the mask and how to get really dark painted. beside the soap i saw the dark skinned character also as special guest in TV shows like this kaffeeklatsch table round of 4 women.

such a dark painted charakter comes up every two year and seems to be a special honour to get casted for the role. could be a ugly duckling story. but i never fellow. just the TV is always on but i never watch.

at the moment i spotted some tarzan alike bushgirl story, but i saw much darker girls in the past.

and they never try to make it look real and i think that is for a reason. same as all the over acting it is the signal that all is fiction and only show.

it comes from another theater tradition, different way/structure ow a storie is told. a different awareness, absorbing of "reality"

and of course the typical soup BS.

with thais together is no problem to watch an art house movie or the newest latin american stuff, even old german black and withe classics.

I know the 'soap' that you refer to--Tarzan-like girls [ 2] living with a bunch of monkeys--my worries were not whether the girl was 'blacked-up' but where they got the unfortunate orangutaans and chimps--neither species being indigenous to Thailand-anyone know if these are part of the 'Safari World' gang?? They sure don't look happy under the camera lights--[dumb TV series as well, even my daughter asked put on a video instead!!]

I really used to enjoy the "Black & White Minstrel Show". It was good clean entertainment for the whole family, with none of that bad language, nudity, or lascivious behaviour that you find on today's shows.
