I've heard that it's not a good idea to put bananas in the fridge as they will turn black. Well, I tried it and it was ok but now EVERYTHING in my fridge tastes of dam_n bananas!

In the UK I'd obviously keep them out in a fruit bowl, but isn't it too hot to do that here in Bangkok?

So I am curious... where do you keep your bananas?

You can keep bananas in refrigerator but the skin would be black, though inside would be ok.

As for smell, put some baking powder in a small bowl inside refrigerator (maybe 20-30grams). :o

I realise the temptation for stupid answers regarding bananas but this was a serious question!

About the baking powder.... does that really work? Have you tried it, or is it just an old wives' tale?

Bananas should never be stored in the fridge, nor in anything that "sweats" i.e. plastic

Keep them out of the light, a cubboard or a brown paper bag.

On to the smelly fridge, a glass of white vinegar or an apple cut in half and placed in the fridge will absorb the smell, even a bowl of plain water will do the job but it will take longer to work.

Seems Arm & Hammer thinks so. Though they mention "soda" rather then "powder". The former is pure sodium bicarbonate and powder has additives so would expect the soda would work longer.

Yes, but I think the cupboards in my kitchen get quite warm during the day...

You can peel them and freeze them, if you break up the hand into individual bananas they will keep longer, plus if you peel them from the bottom you wont get any strings. Thats what a monkey would do.

If your going to keep bananas in the refrigerator, then make sure you put them in when they are just ripe enough to eat. If they are completely ripe and beginning to darken, then refrigeration won't help. They do keep well in the fridge.

And yes baking soda works well as a deodorizer (you might want to put the bananas in a paper bag, but not sealed up tightly). You can also use charcoal, but it's a bit dirtier.

Seriously, the best thing is a banana hammock - google it and ignore the other banana hammocks and get a fruit one or make it yourself. In Hawaii we always had the same problem with the bananas going off to quick. The hanging thing works the best of everything I've tried and it's what most bars and restaurants do in the islands.

Hanging them from a wire even works. If you want them to ripen quicker, put them in a paper bag - not plastic.
