Bahamas Has Granted Former Premier Thaksin Special Passport *unconfirmed*

There are unconfirmed reports that the Bahamas has granted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra a special passport. He's rumoured to surrender the Thai diplomatic passport to the Thai government to lessen the political pressure on current premier Somchai Wongsawat.

PM Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin's brother-in-law, is currently facing intense political pressure to resign or call for House dissolution. He appeared on TV last night to address the nation. Many political observers expected PM Somchai to announce his resignation late last night. But the premier insists he won't resign until the Constitution Drafting Committee has been established. The CDC will be responsible for overseeing the amendment of the 2007 Constitution.

For months the People's Alliance for Democracy has been calling for the Thai government to confiscate Thaksin's diplomatic passport. It's believed that Thaksin will soon surrender the passport in order to lessen the political pressure on his brother in law.

Isn't this where he has parked a lot of the money he isn't supposed to have?

And isn't this where at least one shill company of his is located?

Makes perfect sense. If you bank balance is high enough Bermuda want's

your business, and a p-assport gets them MORE business.

Rather wonderful, that a foreign country allows people to lodge complaints without screams of "foreigner go home".

yet another one of the infamous "Thaksin's defamation lawsuits" gets thrown out... although he did have his proxy agency file it to protect the "fame" of "HIS" airport...

Thai court drops defamation case against Bangkok Post newspaper

Bangkok - The Bangkok Criminal Court on Wednesday dropped a defamation case against the Bangkok Post newspaper and its former editor for an article incorrectly reporting damage to the Thai capital's new airport.

The case was officially dropped because the plaintiff, the state-owned Airports of Thailand (AOT), withdrew its charges that the paper had defamed it by incorrectly reporting on August 9, 2006, about cracks in the runway at Suvarnabhumi International Airport shortly before the huge infrastucture project was opened, court sources said.

The newspaper retraced the report and ran a front-page apology the next day.

The official closure of the case had required the approval of former Transport Minister Santi Pormpat, who signed off on the case on September 16.

Also cleared of charges was co-defendant in the case Kowit Sanandang, a former editor of the Bangkok Post, who faced up to two years in jail if the court had found the newspaper guilty of defamation.

The defamation case against the Bangkok Post was filed by the AOT when Thaksin Shinawatra was still prime minister.

Thaksin, a former telecommunications tycoon turned politician who was prime minister between 2001 to 2006, was notorious for using the courts to silence the press via onerous libel and defamation cases against his critics.

Meanwhile.... back in London... someone's vandalizing poor man Thaksin's Rolls-Royce....

Thaksin limo reported damaged in London

A London newspaper column said on Friday that the "monster" Rolls Royce owned by exiled ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra was damaged.

"It's a nasty old world," said a brief note in the gossipy City Spy column carried in the Business section of the Evening Standard newspaper.

"Spotted in Old Park Lane: some time Manchester City and Thailand boss Thaksin Shinawatra's monster Rolls-Royce... with its passenger window smashed in." :o:D

In reference to the revocation of the diplomatic passport of Thaksin, a sensitive issue for the Thai government in which Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sompong Amornwiwat said earlier that the matter is rested with the prime minister's decision, Somchai said he would ask the secretariat to the prime minister about its progress.

you best ask real soon, Somchai... time is running out...

Thaksin gets his red passport back

The Foreign Ministry has reinstated the diplomatic passport of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, a high-level source in the ministry said yesterday. The renewal of the red passport was made less than two weeks after Thaksin's fomer legal adviser and close aide Noppadon Pattama was appointed Foreign Minister.

http://www.bangkokpost.com/News/23Feb2008_news05.php

The clock is ticking... 2 weeks from the date of their appointment, this administration if it is to act with equal vigor, is October 9th. (being generous at granting a full 2 weeks instead of "less than two weeks")

only 11 days until October 9th...

Abhisit wants PM to lift Thaksin's red passport

Democrat Party Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva called on PM and Defence Minister Somchai Wongsawat to quickly revoke the diplomatic passport of ousted PM Thaksin Shinwatra, who is now living in exile in Britain. According to Mr. Abhisit, the legal process is there for the government to lift Thaksin’s diplomatic passport, and this would be one way for Somchai to show his integrity as Prime Minister.

only 2 more days, Somchai

Somchai and his wife at either end and a gaggle of Shinawatras in between...

October 9th came and went without any action... hard to imagine that the do-nothing administration of Samak was still more pro-active than Somchai's.... but yet it appears it was...

and now... it's time to punt the football back from the Prime Minister's Office to the Foreign Minister's Office...

and meanwhile, no further word from Thaksin himself on his voluntarily giving it up... as he said he would do so recently....

PM's Secretary-General says Foreign Minister will decide whether to annul Thaksin's diplomatic passport

PM's Secretary-General Choosak Sirinil said Monday that the Foreign Minister will be the one to decide whether to annul the diplomatic passport of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Choosak said Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat assigned him to study the issue, but he thought the Foreign Ministry had regulations for considering the issue so he passed on the matter to the Foreign Minister.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Sompong Amornwiwat said the issue should be decided by the Prime Minister.

Ex-premier denies seeking asylum in UK

BANGKOK: Anti-government demonstrators yesterday hailed the guilty verdict handed to ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra as a victory for their protest movement.

Thaksin, speaking to Reuters by telephone, said the case was politically motivated.

He has said before that he could not expect a fair trial from Thai courts. "I have been informed of the result. I had long anticipated that it would turn out this way," he said.

He denied British media reports he was seeking asylum in Britain.

"The court's verdict today is very important as it clearly emphasised what the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has tried to fight for since 2005," said Suriyasai Katasila, spokesperson for the PAD.

"It's clear that Thaksin created policies that provided advantages to his family and his friends. PAD is happy with and admires the court's decision."

Thaksin to surrender diplomatic passport

Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra has decided to return his diplomatic passport to the Foreign Ministry to ease the pressure on his brother-in-law, PM Somchai Wongsawat, a source close to him said yesterday. Thaksin had already informed his brother-in-law of his decision, but has not set a date for the return of the passport, according to the source. One possible date would be Oct 21, as the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions will hand down a verdict on the Ratchadaphisek land case in which Thaksin and his wife, Potjaman, are defendants, the source added.

Thaksin and his wife are seeking political asylum in Britain. The two and their children have been living in self-exile in London since fleeing Thailand in August. They both jumped bail and warrants for their arrest have

He hasn't down the previous ... but perhaps he will do the following....

Thaksin willing to return decorations

Ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will likely agree to return all of his royal decorations if required to by law, Government Spokesman Natthawut Saikua said yesterday.

If Thaksin fails to appeal the Supreme Court's guilty verdict and two-year jail sentence against him in the Ratchadaphisek land case, the Knight Grand Commander (Second Class, higher grade) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao would need to be recalled.

A PM's Office decree endorsed by then-PM Thaksin in August 2005 gives eight criteria for the recalling of royal decorations, including if a person is convicted by the highest court and ordered to serve time in prison.

Although the Supreme Court is the final court of appeal, he can appeal its judgement against him if solid new evidence can be presented that could change the essence of the case, according to directives on appeals for cases under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Political Office Holders.

If Thaksin does not seek a retrial within 30 days, the PM's Office must seek royal approval to demand the royal decorations be returned.

Natthawut said if Thaksin committed an offence that fell into any of the eight categories, he would have to comply with the law. However, he said Thaksin did not commit any corruption.

"Whoever raises the issue only wants to aggravate the situation for the former PM," he said. awwww.... :o

Democrat Party chief adviser Chuan Leekpai suggested the government deal with the matter straightforwardly and in accordance with regulations.

Thaksin has received nine royal decorations, starting with the Member (Fifth Class) of the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand in 1974. The highest was the Knight Grand Commander (Second Class, higher grade) of the Most Illustrious Order of Chula Chom Klao, bestowed in 2003.

The eight criteria for royal decorations to be recalled include the death penalty; a prison sentence, except for petty offences or crimes of negligence; and confiscation of assets for being unusually rich or convicted of anti-money laundering offences. Termination or dismissal for serious disciplinary or other charges, removal from post on malfeasance charges or constitutional offences or for being unusually rich, declared bankruptcy and abuse of the royal decorations are the other grounds for recovery of the royal rewards.

Um..duh...Thaksin was PM for how long????

And now he asks for political asylum on the premise he will not get a fair trial....

What did he do during his reign to ensure the courts were fair and not politically motivated? NOTHING!

His asylum request is therefore ridiculous and he should be made to suffer a trial in the system he helped create/perpetuate.

More so; he politically manipulated the courts in his favor during his time as PM.

i.e. he did the exact inverse of what is required and now when it swings back to

something a bit more normal he cries and whines...

Interesting use of the word 'reign' in this context also.

Maybe not too far from his mindset at the time,

judging from the fallout since...

Cancel his diplomatic red passport and issue an Interpol arrest warrant for him. That would make him fair game for every immigration entry point, airport stop over and police officer in the world. A 5 million baht reward in a secret Swiss account would help.

Get him back and charge him with murders of 2000 drug "suspects". Genocide charges in the International Court of Justice in the Hague, would be nice.

Probably nearer 2,700 people were killed in Toxin's EJK spree, if the truth were known. Unlikely to ever be tried in ICJ, but if the Thai Human Rights Committee were ever properly funded and allowed to operate free from political interference in a post-Toxin era, then enough evidence to convict him as the person primarily responsible for ordering those killings, could I'm sure be produced in a Thai court. Let's hope...............
