Military on alert ahead of pro-Thaksin rally

Army Chief Anupong Paojinda has told related agencies to closely monitor political situation this weekend, army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Friday. Col Sansern also said that soldiers are ready to give support to police if they are requested, if political tension turns into violence. "We will not let any clashes happen," he told reporters. "We will prevent the violence, and will not let history repeat itself." The clashes between police and anti-government supporters on October 7 left two people killed and more than 400 injured. Meanwhile, local media report that hundreds of United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) supporters were planning to travel to Bangkok on Friday to join the pro-government rally. According to People Power Party MP of Udon Thani Surathin Nimanmekin, members of UDD and the Love Udon group will leave the province from 6 to 10pm Friday on tens of buses. They are heading to Bangkok to gather at the Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday, as ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra will be making a phone call to a political talk show Kwan Jing Wan Nee (The Truth Today). His call will be aired at

Somchai visibly under pressure during grilling by Abhisit

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat appeared to be stressed while responding to queries from Opposition Leader Abhisit Vejjajiva during yesterday's meeting of the House of Representatives.

Somchai looked grim and his hands shook as he replied to Abhisit's questions about the PM's responsibility for the violent police crackdown on protesters. The October 7 incident left two people dead and hundreds injured, many with lost limbs.

The premier rarely looked up while reading his explanation in response to the Abhisit's queries.

At the beginning of yesterday's meeting, House Speaker Chai Chidchob informed participants the prime minister was busy elsewhere and assigned PM's Office Minister Sukhumpong Ngonkham to respond to the opposition leader's queries on his behalf.

When Abhisit protested, Sukhumpong explained Somchai had been scheduled to testify before a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) fact-finding committee investigating the street violence.

Abhisit, who is also Democrat Party leader, said as a responsible elected politician, the prime minister should not have missed the House meeting, as he had been informed beforehand about the opposition queries.

Shortly afterwards, the prime minister arrived, explaining he had rushed to Parliament after becoming aware the meeting with the NHRC panel was today and not yesterday. He blamed his secretary for the mix-up.

Abhisit then asked Somchai what orders he or his Cabinet had given in dealing with the protesters outside of Parliament on October 7 and whether the PM knew about the casualties that morning.

Somchai replied he called an urgent meeting of his Cabinet on the night of October 6 after hearing that protesters would move on Parliament. He said Cabinet members decided not to change the venue of the parliamentary meeting to read the government's policy statement.

He also said then-deputy PM Chavalit Yongchaiyudh had been assigned to deal with the protesters.

The premier reiterated his government would accept findings by an independent investigation committee he had set up.

"It's still not clear now who should be held responsible," he said.

Abhisit said it appeared the prime minister was confused about political responsibility versus bureaucratic responsibility. "Do we have to see more damage done to the country before there is a show of political responsibility?" the opposition leader said.

Abhisit then asked the prime minister whether setting up a new Constitution Drafting Assembly (CDA) should be postponed, in order to avoid political confrontation. He also pointed to a smear campaign against the monarchy, particularly over the Internet.

Somchai replied he did not think a new CDA would lead to more conflict. He said it could provide a way out for the country's problems, so he did not plan to drop the assembly.

He also said the government was serious about blocking content disrespectful to the monarchy.

"When I went to the ICT Ministry and had shoes and water bottles thrown at me, I discussed this matter with the officials involved," he said.

The premier added that he would testify today before the NHRC fact-finding committee probing the October 7 incident.

One of 111 banned TRT Party executives, former TRT MP Phongthep Thepkanchana

Thaksin's Spokesman disagrees that former PM is key to solving national situation

Personal Spokesman Phongthep Thepkanchana (TRT Banned #10) to ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra (TRT Banned #1) voiced disagreement to comments made by former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun claiming Thaksin is the key to resolving conflicts within Thailand.

two weeks later and perhaps he's speaking a different tone...

Thaksin's Spokesman Not Sure about Live Phone-In

Personal spokesperson for former premier Thaksin Shinawatra (TRT Banned #1) says he is still unsure whether his boss will make the planned phone-in to a pro-government gathering tomorrow.

Thaksin Shinawatra's spokesman Pongthep Thepkanjana (TRT Banned #10) said he cannot predict whether Thaksin will make a phone call to the pro-government gathering tomorrow.

However, he commented that Thaksin has a right to do so, and he was optimistic that his boss would not make any trouble due to his love for the country.

Today, the production team and the host of the “Today's Truth” is set to announce the schedule tomorrow, for the gathering at Rajamagala National Stadium.

In the meantime, many people are concerned that tomorrow's program could cause more violence between the pro-government group and the People's Alliance for Democracy activists.

Senator General Lertrat Rattanawanit has asked police and military officers to be on high alert for possible clashes between the two groups.

He commented that Thaksin's phone-in plan is not wrong, but that he should not use the state media to escalate the situation.

General Lertrat believes the bomb attack on PAD protesters this week was an attempt to cause divisions among the people, in hopes of making changes.

Therefore, he called on all sides to help maintain the situation, but he believes that no violence will occur before the funeral ceremony for Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.

Hospitals on alert... Army on alert... Supreme Court listening intently.... Busloads of red shirts arriving...

Thai Army chief orders soldiers to be on alert during weekend

Thailand's Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda has instructed army agencies in Bangkok to be on alert for possible untoward incident during the weekend, Army spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Friday.

Col. Sansern also said that soldiers are ready to give support to police if they are requested, if political tension turns into violence.

The Thai Army will not let any clashes happen, he said.

The clashes between police and anti-government supporters on Oct. 7 in Bangkok left two people killed and more than 400 injured. A grenade attack against the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protest site in Bangkok's Makhawan Rangsan Bridge on Thursday wounded six people. *killing one by some reports*

Somchai to visit Laos, Vietnam, New Delhi

Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat has tentative plans to visit Laos, Vietnam, India and Peru next month, officials said.

It is customary for newly appointed prime ministers of the region to make visits to neighbouring countries, especially among ASEAN members.

Earlier plans to pay a visit to ASEAN nations earlier this month were scuttled by political instability inside the country. *and the political state of affairs is much more stable now?* :o:D

Besides Laos, Somchai also plans to visit Hanoi on Thursday and Friday next week to attend the third Summit of the Arrawaddy-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy, a rivers-related regional development forum.

Bangkok Pundit has Thaksin down as speaking tonight at 9:30 PM. I dont know whether he has the day wrong or it is accurate.

close enough, I suppose, for a blogger-source news...:o

but a bigger bombshell is from WHERE is he calling... and will it even be an "international call"?????????

Host of Today's Truth Confirms Thaksin Phones in at 8 p.m. on Sat

People Power Party MP and host of Today's Truth Jatuporn Phromphan has revealed that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra will give a live telephone interview at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the pro-government gathering.

However the PPP MP declined to reveal where Thaksin will physically be during the time of the interview. *ooooo.... a bit of intrigue.... reminds me of one of Thaksin's girlfriends books, "Where are You, Thakky?*

There are unconfirmed reports that Thakin is in Cambodia and will soon be traveling to Chiang Rai Province, from which he is rumoured to be making the call for the live interview on Saturday.

Think I'll pass on a planned BKK trip tomorrow... this has disaster in the brewing written on it....

Thaksin to deliver speech at 8 pm Saturday

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's phone-in is scheduled for today at 8.00 pm to address the pro-government crowds at Rajamangala National Stadium, People Power Party MP and organiser Jatuporn Prompan said Friday.

"Thaksin is free to speak out and will not be restricted by topics and time constraints," Jatuporn said.

He said he anticipated Thaksin to begin his speech by rousing the crowds with the anti-coup message and sharing his thoughts on the global economic volatility before moving on to any topic of his choice.

It,s on NBT now and it,s not considered good, especially as certain members associated with the Samak goverment are involved with assisting this outrageous criminally convicted exile and his self projecting interest ect.ect. to achieve whatever he wishes to do !!!!!!!!

Freedom of speech ???? <deleted> is going on with the powers that be allowing such an event to be staged / stage managed and seemingly condoning / supporting him while ignoring his blatant attacks on the supreme court and the institutions of Thailand

To imagine that one speach from Thaksin will energize non red's to become reds is idiotic.

He will rile up his hardcore believers / nutters and nothing more. The sides are picked already.

Most Thaksin leaning folks are not violent or particularly politically motivated, like most folks.

But those hardcores will come out crazed.....

They of course will go out and try outrageous violence, as they have already started to,

in the hope PAD will be silenced. This speech will be nothing less than a declaration of war,

violence by it's own means, on all who disagree with Thakin's goals. Which is take over Thailand.

He WOULD be a Dictator if he comes back NO QUESTION....

This speach will likely be an attempt to create civil war... because HE is slighted by parts of the country.

It's his only shot, he MUST run off the powers against him or lose his pile of cash.

The only way is a war of attrition, grind down the point people, PAD, till they can't stand the pain.

It also should become GLARINGLY clear how round the twist he has gone, and how desperate.

I am glad I can't hear a running translation, because it will be too nasty to be calm about.

Blame all but himself, and then tell the fools to attack all who disagree...

It may not be as BLATANT as that, but will amount to the same thing.

This just sucks!

There seemed to be quite a big polemic on TV a few weeks ago about peoples from PAD carrying guns or not.

at 3:07 on this video, I think nobody can denie it's a gun

ummmm it looks like a revolver ... who that is and why he has it is the question .... since no police were shot with a gun all we know is that simple fact.

What I find funny is the PAD sleep in the Government House and did some more wrong things and if the red pulls them out, they (the reds) are blamed for using violence.

you find that funny?

but yes .... 'the reds' are not empowered to be law enforcement etc ....

Metropolitan Police Chief Police Lieutenant-General Suchart Muankaew

NCCC to probe police over crackdown on protesters

The National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) agreed Tuesday to set up a panel to investigate

Bangkok police chief awaits violence probe

Metropolitan Police Chief Suchart Muankaew said he is ready to accept the result of an investigation on Tuesday's lethal crackdown on anti-government protesters. The tear-gas crackdown on Tuesday left two people killed and more than 400 injured. He said he was the commander of the event that day, and will accept whatever the fact-finding panel says. If it finds that police are wrong, then he said he is willing to take the responsibility. Police Lt-Gen Suchart said police do not want the outcome to be that way, and that what happened was unavoidable.

New words...regarding today... from Metropolitan Police Chief Police Lieutenant-General Suchart Muankaew

"We fear that there will be more violent incidents so security officials have been ordered to be on alert," Metropolitan Police Chief Lt. Gen. Suchart Muenkaew said Thursday, adding that there would be at least 600 policemen at the rally, organized by the pro-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, or UDD.

Jatuporn Phromphan, one of the UDD organizers, said Thaksin "will be talking about the benefits of a democratic system and how the coup has thwarted that."

"This demonstration will be a peaceful show of force by those who support Thaksin and those who support democratic values in Thailand," Jatuporn said.

Concern about what Thaksin will say is widespread.

"The event organizers have claimed that the program will not be provocative," the English-language Bangkok Post said in an editorial. "Should it turn out otherwise, the UDD must be held accountable."

Thai army spokesman Col. Sansern Kaewkumnerd said the military would also be on alert in case the situation spirals out of control.

"If the police ask for help or * that's a very important "or" * if the situation appears to escalate toward violence, we would come in to prevent another round of that," he said in a telephone interview.

The UDD is opposed to the People's Alliance for Democracy, which is seeking Somchai's resignation. They charge that Somchai is a puppet of Thaksin, whom they accuse of corrupting Thai politics.

===========================================================

600 cops for what Jatuporn has said will be at least 60,000 mobsters in attendance? more yeast and hops for the disaster that is brewing...

That is, indeed, a very important "or" for the Army to intervene...

Thaksin 'plans taped message'

Plans for live speech reportedly canceled

Ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra is understood to have turned to a pre-recorded message aimed at hyping up tens of thousands of his supporters expected to show up today at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium.

Previously, Thaksin planned to phone in from overseas *or possibly Chiang Rai* :o for a live speech to his audience. However, this was reportedly canceled out of fear of worsening the political situation.

Government sources said Thaksin arrived in Hong Kong yesterday, where he will record an eight-minute message for today's gathering of his supporters.

*London...Cambodia...Chiang Rai...and now, Hong Kong, sheesh... here's that book from one of Thaksin's girlfriend...

30043291-01-1.jpg

Thaksin's message is expected to be softer than his previous remarks, playing the middle ground in the ongoing political conflict with emphasis on national reconciliation and loyalty to the monarchy.

Previously, the military voiced strong opposition to his plan for a live address.

Chaowarin Latthasaksiri, a government MP, said yesterday that Thaksin was in Dubai prior to his arrival in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, both anti- and pro-government groups started to reach Bangkok from various parts of the country.

The Phichit chapter of the People's Alliance for Democracy said PAD-led crowds from the North would surge at Government House in order to counter the pro-government rally at Rajamangala Stadium.

The PAD's Nakhon Ratchasima chapter has also stepped up its mobilisation of people from the Northeast to travel to the capital.

Organisers of the pro-government rally have started dispatching convoys to transport their people from the Northeast, seen as the stronghold of the main coalition partner, the People Power Party.

Rajamangala Stadium can accommodate 70,000 people and today's crowd might surge to around 100,000.*and...with only 600 cops present*

Army Chief General Anupong Paochinda has ordered close monitoring of the situation with the aim of preventing the opposing factions from clashing, said Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnoed.

Sansern said soldiers were on the standby to assist the police in keeping the peace.

Despite reports to the contrary, People Power Party MP and event organiser Jatuporn Prompan said Thaksin's phone-in plans remained unchanged and he would address his supporters at 8pm today.

"Thaksin is free to speak out and will not be restricted by topics and time constraints," Jatuporn said.

He said he anticipated Thaksin would begin his speech by rousing the crowd with an anti-coup message and sharing his thoughts on global economic volatility, before moving on to any topic of his choice.

He said he did not know from which location Thaksin would make his telephone call. There has been speculation that the ousted premier flew from London to Hong Kong via Dubai for the phone-in session.

The rally - billed as the mobile event of the "Today's Truth" talk show aired by NBT Channel - will begin at 3pm and is expected to conclude around 10pm. Key speakers are scheduled to address the crowds from 5.30pm as a forerunner to Thaksin's phone-in, which is billed as the main attraction.

The event will be taped and highlights will be broadcast during the NBT talk show on week nights.

speaking of Thaksin lover's books....

Noppadon book hits back at his critics

Former foreign minister Noppadon Pattama yesterday released his book, "I Am No Traitor", to defend his record relating to the Preah Vihear Temple controversy.

Noppadon resigned in July in the wake of a censure debate on his involvement in the Cambodian push to include the ancient temple on the World Heritage List, seen by the opposition as having repercussions on Thai territorial integrity.

"Facts in my book will show that I am a political victim," Noppadon said.

He said opponents of Thaksin Shinawatra tried to fault him as part of their smear campaign against the ousted leader.

He denied that the joint communique he signed had put Thailand at risk for losing 4.6 square kilometres. Bilateral negotiations to resolve the border dispute with Cambodia are the best option available as other means, such as multilateral talks, international mediation, the United Nations involvement, and litigation in the International Court of Justice, would likely be unfavourable to the Thai side, he said.

Banned Thai Rak Thai Party executive Chaturon Chaisang (TRT Banned # 2) said Noppadon was swept out of office by the frenzy of ultra-nationalism although he was not at fault. *and the Constitution Court ruling that Noppadope and the Cabinet had broken the law had no bearing on Noppadope's firing?*
