I've been following this visa extension based on marriage for quite a while now and whilst there are a number of ways which are accepted I am sure, we are also getting more and more questions from people under 50 who are married but who do not work and therefore have visa issues. I am hoping in this thread to deal with some facts from people who have done this successfully and get some comments on the issue.

My main query is just what you have to provide to show you have Bt40,000 a month. Now we seem to agree that going to the amphur (or somewhere) and paying taxes on a fictitious income will work but there are potentially unnecessary costs associated with that.

We also know that if you are a USA citizen you can tell them whatever you want under oath at the embassy. So let's leave the USA issue out of this.

Let's say you don't work or have to. You have enough money or earn it somewhere outside Thailand. Now lets take the UK scenario. How does a guy avoid paying unnecessary taxes on non existent incomes when he is a UK national ? Can you just transfer in Bt480,000 a year to Thailand ? Could a rental agreement outside Thailand be sufficient ?

Basically, what can someone do to show 40k without having to pay the tax on it. I am not on about easily provable things like pensions or investments in banks etc. I am taking about other methods - just what will they accept ?

The Thai requirement s are as follows:

Only for clause (6), there shall be a letter of confirmation from a bank in Thailand and copy of bank book or proof of income of either party or both in the total amount of not less than Baht 40,000 per month, such as personal income tax return with receipt, proof of pension, proof of interest from bank account deposit or proof of other income from authority concerned.

Just what do they mean by

proof of other income from authority concerned

The embassy might want to see where the funds come from.

Not drug dealing or other illegal activities.

Unlikely. What if you loose your tenant and cannot relet?

Not that investments in funds are as gold clad as they used to be. :o

Why not call the embassy and see what they will accept, as that gives some

clue to what has gone before.

I am struggling with a similar dilemma in another country.

They want to see a monthly income, but my money comes every 6 months. :D

I have successfully had 2 extensions based on marriage. I am under 50 and receiving a govt pension from the UK. It is taxed in the UK, not here in Thailand. I had to get my income verified by the British Embassy which was then sent to MFA in Bangkok for them to verify British Embassy paperwork, then all paperwork submitted to immigration in Jomtein. I also submitted to British Embassy a Bond Certificate which pays monthly interest which was included in my monthly total.

I do not see as to why a rental agreement would not be suffice as my bond was running out within 3 months of my extension.

The immigration officer told me that it was not necessary to transfer my money every month, but I would transfer quarterly as a minimum.

I am a similiar position of not knowing. I have the income form a couple of sources. Rent and early inheritance "gifting" every month. I am bringing rental contracts, and a notarized letter from my giftor. I also have a couple of years of bank statements that show I have had this income for the entire last two years while living in Thailand. The rental contracts are from several people as I rent rooms rather than the whole house. A more stable position I think. If I lose a renter, I lose a portion of income....not the entire rent.

I don't know what the Canadain embassy will require. And I probably should phone them... I have been lazy. I wil phone them Tuesday morning and ask. Wil post and let you know what they say.

My thinking is that some way....I will get an extension. Just bring all that I can....including the willingness to do whatever it takes...including paying taxes on a ficticious income....allthough I don't think I will have to.

It is the authority that the immigration office specifies at a given time. At present it is the consulate in Thailand of country of which the applicant for extension is a national.
