F1 Simulator Rigs

from plastic plumbing pipes, it dam_n well fell apart whilst

he was demonstrating it!!!

2DOF - is 2 degrees of freedom

3DOF - is 3 degrees of freedom

most degrees of freedom are 6 usually (for high end flight simulations). and no it's not a local term, it's international.

2DOF comes in the form of either a motion platform or a motion cockpit, 3DOF-6DOF is motion platform only. also options are electric or hydrolic.

I'm building a 3DOF motion platform with electric servos at the moment.

think the plastic one your talking about is based on an old motionless design, its like an inner frame and an outer frame. it'll flex like nothing else. really need metal pipes but it all becomes too heavy for the motors to move it (usually for that setup they use windscreen wiper motors with the gearbox attached still).

oh i just looked at simworx, did they actually move? or just a cockpit to sit in? (motionless)

The unit had pitch, roll and yaw from their six motor motion system

the website only shows the chassis on a driveway but it actually

sits on their motion system. There was tremble seat feedback

(Sommaz might have enjoyed that) and full feedback from pedals and wheel.

As for windscreen wiper motors, are you crazy, no way are they strong enough

you need to look at, say, a wheelchair motor or something of that power.

what are you using for a framework?

Do you have any engineering experience?

hardly crazy. windshield motors are highly durable, and with a small tweak produce a high power output and response with the standard gearbox attached. a wheelchair motor is way too heavy and slow.

this is a 2dof with windshield wiper motors with i assume the same style of plastic rig you saw before (this has been reinforced with some metal pipes)

this is what i'm building (not my video, but the same in essence)

there's not much to it 'framework' wise. it's a motion platform. so its just 3 motors and a platform. and yeah, electrical and mechanical engineering at what i would call a basic level now (was a long time ago), but i have some expert from some other engineer friends on the project.

All looks a bit 'School boy-ish' to me, no way is there that much movement in an F1 car, that guy is pitching up at 40º its more

No offence taken, but mine was built by Ball Racing Developments who specialise in open-wheel simulators, so it is hardly "make-shift"! All metal construction, no plastic piping!

F1 cars don't roll and pitch a whole lot last time I checked? (Unless they're barrell-rolling off the track of course)

no they dont, but the roll, pitch and heave is for the personal sensations. so when you jump on the brakes it'll push you forward (up in the air) so your looking down at the ground - simulating the forward g force under braking. its all just to push your body in the direction that the forces would take you.

You guys seem to be missing the point..

The pitch and roll is the opposite of the action your taking.. Hence it pitches back during accelleration and forward during braking.. This the creates the sensation of braking forces or cornering forces by using gravity to provide them..

think about it for a second..

Way to geeky for me to want one.. but wouldnt mind a spin in one for a hours playtime.. Surprised not seen anything like this in arcade setups.
