A Friend With A Serious Allergy To Seafood....can You Help?

Featured Replies

Here's what he wrote me in advance of his first trip to Bangkok.

I am highly allergic to seafood ...even a little shrimp paste in a soup can land me in the hospital ... Can you please let me know from your thai friends what would be the thai sentence to say "No seafood of any type in my food pls , thank you"

Can you help with a translation (in Thai) and also an English version of how the Thai words sound in English?

He's going to be here Friday.....so no rush. You guys are always so darn helpful!!

Dear webworldly,

For this sentence "No seafood to any type of my food pls, Thank you" in Thai we write like this " ไม่ใส่อาหารทะเลทุกชนิด ขอบคุณครับ"

And for the transliteration, you can say and tell the waiter "mai-sai-aa-haan-ta-ley-tuk-cha-nid.....kop koon krap"

For your knowledge

Aa-haan-ta-ley = Seafood

Tuk-cha-nid = All types

Kop koon krap = Thank you

Nice day,

Hi Kroo Ae! :-)

Kop koon krap........in fact, "Kop Koon Krap Very Very Very Much!!!!!

This particular part of the forum is so one sided......we all come for translation help, yet we can offer nothing in return other than our sincere gratitude.....so that is what I extend to you!

I have a similar/same allergy. A word of caution

Once told someone post-34728-1224587461.gif , in Thai, no SEA FOOD. She offered me a fish "This not from sea. This from RIVER"

Arghhhhh !!

Would fish sauce as a condiment also be a problem?

If so, then it might prove rather difficult to eat local food.

I would kind of suggest having this printed .... and using it EVERYWHERE he eats ..

it reads a bit like English written into Thai (as opposed to just Thai) but is fully understandable

ผมแพ้อาหารทะเลทุกชนิด ช่วยทำให้แน่ใจด้วยว่าไม่มีอาหารทะเลอยู่ ขอบคุณครับ

just stay away from all seafood, but not easy.eat out in western places to be safe, make sure he has health cover.Allergies can be life threatening.

As someone suggested, have it printed out in Thai.

But..I dont think having "No seafood of any type in my food pls , thank you" is enough to be honest. I have a mild allergy to shrimp, and im vegetarian, yet at times my allergy is activated from food that i eat even when i confirm "aahan jay, chai mai kha?"(this is vegitarian food, yes?). I think the card should stress that he has an SERIOUS allergy so the staff really take note. Often shrimp paste is used in curries, such as green curry and the chief may not take that into consideration. Even vegetarian green curry is often made with shrimp paste, if made at a non-vegetarian specific restaurant. There are specific vegetarian restaurants where the food will be made with substitutes and western restaurants where the food should not contain seafood unless stated, but if i were your friend i would still stress the fact that i have a serious allergy.

I dont know how to write in Thai, so have to leave the other guys to help you out with that, sorry.

Hope your friend has an enjoyable and gastronomical trip :o

Thank you again. I think he'll be ok with the information and translations provided here. We'll know for sure once we get some proper Thai food in him on Saturday!

a quick translation of the above

I am allergic to seafood of all types! Please be sure that there is no seafood in the food. thank you

it could be worded to add things like shrimp paste or fish sauce (normal seafood allergies don't seem to include fish .. but)

If there are specific allergies I could write something better I think ...

Sadly fish sauce is in most things - INCLUDING some Thai Desserts as salt equivilent flavouring....

I live here and cook at home (as well as eating out!). I like Thai Food, but reading the english ingredients, 95% of packets say either Fish Sauce or Shimp Paste. There are A FEW that do not have it, but usually the high end specialist brands, stocked in places like Foodland or Villa Supermarket

Keeps me limited to things like Tom Ka Gai, which SHOULD NOT have fish sauce in the ingredients. Also "Stewed Pork Leg" in food halls
