Came across this odd but beautiful red plant while mountain biking on Doi Pha Klong behind Doi Pui yesterday. Nobody in our group had ever seen one and we were wondering what it is. It stands about 8 inches tall and was at about 1100 meters in elevation growing on the forest floor. Any ideas?

Finding something so beautiful in the wild is an exciting discovery. I love exploring undisturbed natural areas in hope of finding rare and beautiful plants.

What you have found is a "Costas" I believe it is a "Costus stenophyllus". I have never seen or heard of one growing wild in that area, so a seedling may have been dropped by a bird.

A yellow trumpet like flower comes out of the red cone shaped flower seen in your photos, and is edible! Very sweet infact.

Nice find,

Thank You not only for the answer, but for putting together such a thoughtful reply as well! We are lucky to live in a country (or a planet!) where we can appreciate such things.
