Hi,

This question has probably been asked a few times on here but I haven't really found a definite answer. My wife and I had the traditional marriage ceremony last year but still haven't done the paperwork due to a few different reasons. We are now at the stage where we have to do the paperwork and I need to obtain a marriage affidavit to say I'm free to marry. What I would like to know is how do I go about getting one? I currently live and work in Pattaya and work 6 days a week including Saturdays so spending 2 or 3 days (this is how long I've heard it takes) in Bangkok trying to obtain one is pretty much out of the question at the moment. So I was just wondering if it's possible to obtain one somewhere in Pattaya... or.... I have some family coming over here next month so is it possible for them to obtain one for me from their local government offices? Please note that I am from England in case you were wondering.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

The form you refer to is the Affirmation of Eligibility for a foreigner to marry a Thai National. You should look on to your own country's embassy website from where you should be able to download the appropriate blank form. Then have it translated to Thai and certified by a bona fide translation service. Then up to the Thai Ministry Office in Wattana Bangkok. Then collate everything and just turn up at he registrars office which is the easiest (and cheapest) part of the whole proceedings. All info available on your embassy website. You can employ an agency to run around for you if you have money to burn. I paid the translator to take and deliver to Wattana then he posted the whole lot up to Isaan for me.

The marriage affidavid has to be obtained from your embassy, check your embassy website about which documents they need.

The procedure is you go to your embassy with all necesarry documents and get the marriage affidavid. Next you need the document get translated into Thai. You take the translation to the Thai ministry of foreign affairs, consular section for legalisation. Next you can go to any amphur and have your marriage registered.

There is a long waiting time at the MFA, about 3 to 4 hours. Depending on your embassy you could do it all in one day however. Note that many translation agencies will not only do the translation, but also the legalisation for you and can send it back to you in Pattaya. In some cases, depending on the embassy, they can also do the embassy part for you.

I used an agent, gave them my docs (check brit embassy site) and they did everything, you can fax or email copies of docs then when all ready go to B em bkk and get your ok from them.

It would help if you said which country you are from.

For the US consulate it would take about one hour. I have heard UK embassy takes until the next day.

You can take the affidavit or whatever your consulate calls it to a translator and they can handle the certification from the MFA. If short on time they will even EMS it to you after they finish.

From your previous topic on this subject I discovered that you are from the UK for the info you require go to this page on the UK embassy website.

There is a Honarary consulate in Pattaya but no office that I have heard of yet only that he can be found at a cafe outside the immigration office most mornings. Perhaps Bangkok can provide you with contact info.

If consulate in Pattaya can do it for you. I am sure you can find a translator in Pattaya that can handle the MFA certification for you.
