My wife got ILR when she was married to her 1st husband and unbeknown to her he never put her on council tax-this was a few years ago so don't quote me 100%, regs may be tighter now.

However, this came to our attention when she found her dream job working with elderly in a carehome (and indeed affected any other jobs she was going for).

She couldnt prove her address that we were putting on application forms and in the case of the care home, her Criminal Records Bureau check pulled this up and the home withdrew the job offer.

Remember, anyone can put a bank a/c at an address or even have a utility bill in their name to "prove" where they live. Council tax is the only 1 that authorities take as proof.

Bottom line, not only is it illegal not to register her, its also in her interests (and yours) for her to be registered.

You do need 6 documents for each year, spread over the year. Council tax bills are all useful for this, but not essential as you could use utility bills, bank statements etc.

You have presumably told your local council that you are now married and livng with your wife and so are no longer entitled to the single occupant discount.
