TAT drives for home travel

BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has launched its "Bustling Thai Tourism, Burgeoning Thai Economy" campaign, aimed at restoring domestic tourism in the fourth quarter.

The campaign will boost tourism and raise that industry's contribution to a hoped-for national economic revival in the remaining months of the year. This coincides with the authority's attempts to achieve 5-per-cent growth, or 87 million trips, in the domestic tourism market this year.

Juthaporn Rerngronasa, deputy governor for marketing communications, said tourism had been hurt by the global economic meltdown, so the campaign would encourage domestic travel among Thais.

To promote the campaign among the public, celebrities Ponglang Sa-on, Lydia, Amarin Nitipon, Nattharika Thamma-preedanan and a group of young actors from the movie "Dream Team" were present at yesterday's launch.

Moreover, Thai mega-superstar Thongchai McIntyre will be a hit with families and singles alike upcountry, while folk sensation Ponglang will be on hand to mingle with his fans. Various other celebrities will be invited to participate later.

The campaign acts as a unified channel to showcase hundreds of tourism activities and events.

:D ...amazing Thailand...with a recession around the corner TAT is promoting domestic tourism and messages that around 1 million people will lose their jobs will help restore domestic tourism and even a growth of 5%...?

Well, the hotels and restaurants better start hiring extra staff for the last 2 months of the year to welcome all those domestic tourists... :o

TIT & TAT at it's best.

Well, actually robust domestic activity, be it tourism or anything else, could be a life saver during these times, but the sentiment is complete opposite. Extra travelling or extra any spending is very far from most people's minds.

>>Juthaporn Rerngronasa, deputy governor for marketing communications, said tourism had been hurt by the global economic meltdown<<

Nothing to do with the yellow shirted terrorists at Government House.

Nothing to do with thousands of people marching through the business and tourist precincts.

Nothing to do with people being killed at Parliament House.

Nothing to do with an unstable government.

Nothing to do with 50,000 international passengers not being able to get flights home when the yellow shirted terrorists closed airports.

Another insightful appraisal by TAT.

It's the world's fault. Nothing to do with us. Come and save the mother country from the effects of the evil foreigners.

>"Bustling Thai Tourism, Burgeoning Thai Economy"<

Nobody seems to be reporting must bustling anywhere and as LaoPo points out, with a recession just around the corner and one million Thais expected to loose their jobs the "Burgeoning Thai Economy" is... where?

I wonder if this is part of TATs plan to alter all of the Wikipedia entries on Thailand as well?

Does this also mean they've given up on attracting big spending Chinese tourists?

That promoting domestic tourism is always a s sign that the agency is complete helpless and have no clue what to do.

I recall I sent an email to TAT in December 2006. I still wait for the answer.

"Hustling Thai Tourism, Bludgeoning Thai Economy" is more like it!! :o

ROTFLOL!

Best one I heard all day!

If they want people to travel and such,

just call an election every 2 months

All will go home to vote and see family for the weekend.

It will also add to the dry days sans alcohol too.

:D ...must be you...I sent them an email about 2 weeks ago and got an answer the next day ! True !

I asked where the heck the tourism statistics went since they didn't publish them anymore.

They answered it's the responsibility of the "Office of Tourism Development" now... :o

The data they supply are for the previous years but for the present year of 2008 they give the 3 months periods and the last one is

"INTERNATIONAL TOURISTS ARRIVAL TO THAILAND BY NATIONALITY" for the period from March>>June.

July>>September (although it's October 31 already), is not yet available.

In fairness to TAT there is a very large internal tourism industry.

It is especially active at this time of the year with all the government transfers happening. My girlfriend can go away almost every weekend in October and November to accompany one or other of the local government hierarchy as they get escorted to their new position by the current staff. They hire mini busses and travel all over the place, leave Thursday or Friday and have a party on the Saturday night and home on Sunday.

He!l only the Thais would travel to some of these places, no foreign family group would.

Let see

63 million Thais total.

Domestic "Tourism"

.............Trip Change Length of Stay /person/day Change Million	Change
Year (Million (%) (Days) (Baht) (%) (Baht)	(%)

2006/1	81.49 + 2.4 2.65 1,795.09	+ 1.48 322,533.71 + 8.41

63 million Thais, but 81 million of them take vacations....

So 1/3 double up. Uh...

Except a huge percentage can't afford buss fare and food the same month.

So a big % must take multiple trips to see the sights.

Or they count every trip home as tourism for Big holidays, Songkran and voting.

Every pick up truck load of migrant workers from the north to construction in

resort areas is a vacation trip too. Don't forget the jobs over return trip too.
