I think this is connected to an earlier thread of mine about being unable to stream live TV, yes I’m still fiddling around with that. :D

When I try to play a .wmv file I get the “WMP has encountered a problem and needs to close” message. The file will work on other players just not on WMP.

I have WMP 11 and have tried to uninstall it to either reinstall it again or go back to WMP10 but it won’t uninstall. It does a roll back and says “finished” but it is still there in the add/ remove list, but the shortcuts don’t work so I have to reinstall it.

After the 11 roll back I tried to install WMP10 but it said this was incompatible with my setup so am stuck with 11.

Googling this brought up similar problems but no real answers.

My WMP 11 used to play these files so I’m guessing I must have done something or a recent update is causing the problem.

Apart from not playing .wmv files and streaming live TV WMP works OK.

I would try to uninstall WMP11 again. Reboot. Clean registry with CCleaner (for instance, which is free, but if you can get RegistryBooster which is not, it's more efficient). Reboot. Try to install WMP9 or 10. Check if at this point, it works or not with your .wmv files. If not, it might be because of a few missing codecs. Download latest codecs packages (even check for old ones, such as those included in wmp6cdcs.exe or WM9Codecs.exe). If your problem is solved, then upgrade to WMP11...

Have not tried a reg clean after uninstall yet, I have Registry Booster so will try it with that. If that will let me install WMP10 I

think it may help solve my problem.

I have the K-Lite Codec pack and that worked fine before, I did install the latest version but that did not help. Don't know about wmp6cdcs.exe or WM9Codecs.exe but will Google them.

Thanks
