Since returning home, I cannot get my notebook to pick up the Internet through my home wifi network. Other computers pick it up okay, but the notebook only gives limited connectivity or local connectivity - does not go through to the Internet. Tried the usual repair options without success. However, if I turn the router off and then on again, the connection to the Internet is then established. Note that this only affects the notebook and was not an issue before I took the notebook OS (where I had no problems getting wireless connections.) Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

your routeur is maybe only allowing the dhcp server to give two or three ip adresses, you may want to check this and also try with static ip.

Thanks NHJ - but that is not the problem. There was no issue before I took the notebook OS. I suspect I must have inadvertently changed a setting somewhere on the notebook, but I have been through all settings and cannot find anything wrong.

Still unresolved but if/when I sort out the problem, I will post the solution here for inf of any others who may encounter the same problem. Currently contemplating deleting the entire network settings on all computers and starting a new setup as a last resort.

I find this a common problem on Vista. My Asus notebook on Vista OS has the same problem. But it works fine at wifi connection at work on Linksys wifi router.

At home on D-link wifi router it does that but only about 10 percent of the time.

On areas thats giving free wifi access, its a 50/50 chance I'll get that "local connection" only.

If you can, try to plug an USB WiFi network adapter (it's not expensive nowadays - I bought one SMC Networks SMCUSB-G2 802.11g 54mbps last year for 650 baht) on your notebook and check if you access your WiFi network with this new device.

If it works, then, your problem is very likely related with your current Wifi device, and probably with its driver. Then, stay connected using your new USB wifi adapter, delete your current (apparently defective) Wifi network adapter in your device list (in the device manager utility) and make your computer scanning for hardware changes: it should attempt to reinstall your previous Wifi network adapter and its driver and it may solve your problem (you can test without your new USB wifi network adapter if it works then).
