I seem to remember that once upon a time, TOT was slowing connections with active torrents. That is, if you torrented something, the entire internet connection would slow down even for non-torrents?

Does anyone know if this is still happening? I instructed my connection-sharing neighbor to set Vuze to encrypted connections only, and to limit upload speed to 10KB/s, and I can see on the bandwidth graph that's what he did. Yet, my connection is near-unusable as long as there is any torrent activity happening. When I shut out his machine, speed is back to normal. TOT-normal, that is - it's not that great, but at least it's usable.

Anyone have recent experience with this? I am trying to figure out if it's TOT or if it's something on our end, e.g. maybe the modem just slows down, or 10KB upload is too much for the connection....

TOT probably also limits the amount of open connections you can have.

The nature of P2P programs are to open as many connections as possible, so even when staying well below speed capacity of your line, TOT might refuse any new connections rendering your internet useless as long as Vuze has a bunch of them open...

Good point, that would explain it. I'll ask neighbor to reduce the # of total simultaneous conns in Vuze too, see if that helps.

go to the azureus wiki and have a look for settings who do match your connection, then dived them by two as you seem to be two to download using torrent protocol.

My ISP (Maxnet) began traffic shaping p2p services about a year ago and downloading Torrents was a struggle.

Than I discovered another alternative to Torrents: Rapidshare.

This system works by downloading directly from a website in segmented rar files.

Now I can download a full movie is just over an hour and have never looked back.

tt&t maxnet do the same on their Indi package, any torrents I was downloading would take forever, then the girl in their shop suggested I change to their premier package (something to do with them having a lot fewer people sharing the connection at their end on this package). Although it's 90 baht more for half the speed I have no problems with any torrents I download, and it's more reliable and the speed is more consistant than the TOT package I used to have.
