Is anybody here running Windows mobile devices and using a Mac as their primary computer? I just ordered an HTC Touch HD and haven't the foggiest clue about compatibility with Macs. I think tethering is flawless but not sure about video conversions, syncing with itunes etc. Anybody have suggestions about useful software, prefereably freeware? Any handy hacks or tips for me?

I suppose I could run XP on boot camp if I really had to but would rather really just avoid that. I am only really using an HTC because of my circumstance and figured if I can't run my iPhone then might as well go for what is now considered to be the next best thing.

I don't expect the experience to be seamless on a Mac but am willing to fiddle around to make it the best I can. I will mainly be using it to tether to my Mac and as stand alone device for internet browsing for the times I don't have battery in my laptop or am just simply too lazy to tether and want to browse from my hammock or whatever. Although I will try to take advantage of the other features it offers if I can.

I also have a 3G iPhone but it is locked and I heard the SIM card solutions cut down the signal reception. Every cheap phone in the village could get signal at the place I stay but my iPhone would get like one bar and drop it. The only thing I could do is load up pages when I had signal so I could read them when it dropped. When it came time to refresh pages or navigate to new ones I would either wait for signal to come back or walk up the road where I actually got some signal, very frustrating to say the least LOL. That was on my first gen iPhone and that had problems so don't assume the SIM hack will work out for me if the first gen didn't cut it.

Also no tethering etc (I know you can unofficially tether but reports say it will run out of battery rather fast even when plugged in). That is sort of unacceptable as I only have power a few hours a day where I will be staying. So when the battery runs out I would have to wait to charge it when the generator is on and not use it while it charges. After which I would get another hour maybe of tethering. LOL That's absurd to not be able to take advantage of power supply during the limited times I have power each day.

I suppose if I hate the HTC for browsing I could always tether it and turn on airport internet sharing and use my iPhone from my hammock. This is also a rather absurd work around. LOL Seems with technology in remote areas no matter what you have with you there is always some prepostorous things you have to do to use any of it. One thing works but the other won't unless you have a special doo dad or add on or whatever.

Anyway looking forward to any tips people might have. Of course I am looking at other forums for info but sometimes there is a regional perspective here and observations by other remote users that helps. I am also a complete WM newbie and find the tech language in some of the foums a bit hard to follow at times. I have never had any reason to learn WM jargon and terms before. So please assume I am stupid when replying to me here. :o

I will give some observations on how the HTC compares to the iPhone as well, later when I have had the chance to play around on it. My HTC should be here tomorrow.

Any advice you can give me is appreciated.

You ordered an HTC Touch HD just for tethering? Wow.

Tethering is going to come to the iPhone relatively soon, if rumors are to be believed. It's going to be an official Apple solution so it's going to work. I have tried the unofficial way but didn't get it to work....

Well for tethering and because my iPhone doesn't get enough signal outside of cities to be useful. If my iPhone doesn't get a signal in the location I need to use it then it negates all of it's capabilities. You don't think Apple is going to allow tethering with out some how trying to let network carriers anal rape their customers do you? I read ATT will allow tethering but my guess is you will have to go through itunes and if you tether expect a $30 charge automatically added to your bill. Perhaps you will be put on the tethering plan when you agree to download the firmware that uncripples the bluetooth stack. In the rumors that said tethering were coming to the iPhone it was clearly stated that ATT won't be doing this free. I don't know how this will play out in other markets. I believe O2 here in the Uk stated they didn't care if people tethered or not.

I also wanted to test the newest "iPhone killer" and would like a phone that can browse the net well enough with out being tethered. Swappable battery is also a big plus for an area with out constant electricity.

So basically as far as my choice goes the iPhone with no signal, and nonreplaceable battery isn't able to tether, browse make calls, use GPS. Would you roll only with an iPhone in a remote area under those circumstances if it was your only way to access the outside world?

If There were many factors in my decision. If my phone got a signal like every other cheap phone in the village I wouldn't be buying an HTC Touch HD. The iphone is the best media player and browser ever made but the phone itself is absolutely terrible. So if I can't use my iPhone I am settling for the next best thing. I can still use it as an iPod and play games on it.
