I just spoke to a friend in Canada who was coming to Bangkok in early December for a big conference to be held (maybe ironically) at the Queen Sirkikit Convention centre. There were going to be delegates from all over the world, numbering in their thousands. They just had to cancel it, which will be a blow to the centre, hotels and the Bangkok economy generally. I suspect this could be multiplied many times over.

Bangkok hoteliers have also lost out on the hastily rearranged APEC summit, and the thousands of hotel rooms that would have taken up in the capital, as it has moved to Chiang Mai (but may be cancelled completely).

Yesterday in Pattaya, a Thai travel agent friend was disconsolate because a group of 600 Russians had cancelled their flights and accomodation with her.

I wonder does anyone else know of tangible and specific lost tourism/conference business to the country and to Bangkok in particular as this crisis plays out?

My friend a travel agent in the UK says they are offering/exchanging there travelers to Thailand and India to holiday in Mexico and Cuba, form now until after the New Year.

So looks like the forecast of 800 + jobs will be lost in this industry in Thailand may well double

ASEAN not APEC. They are entirely different.

Correct - silly mistake and well spotted. I'd just got out of bed when I wrote that!
