Thia Words For Cancer, And Ulcer

Featured Replies

Hi,

Could someone with more knowledge than me please post english translations of the words for cancer, and ulcer.

My girlfriend is in hospitol in Bkk about to have survery and cannot communicate to me exactly what is wrong. her sister and mother are there, but speak less english than my thai. I would like to be able to ask what is wrong. My girlfriend is high on morphine and can only tell me; 'meat in my stomach bad'

Thank you in advance

plair (rising tone) nai gra(low tone) po!(high tone)

plair nai gra-po! means stomach ulcer.

ma (high tone) reng , ma-reng , translates as cancer or malignant

Ive just shown this to a Thai and they have no idea what it could be.. Try and tell her to ask the doctor what the english translation is for her illness.

เนื้องอก neua ngawk ????

Thank you for your help, unfortunately when I was speaking with her she was rather incoherent.

KhaoNiaw: You were spot on!

She is now recoverring well ish at home, hoping the airport will be able to fly her back to Udon to be with family soon.

Thanks for playing my rather absurd guessing game!

I have always known Thais to use the word "malig" for cancer, and just presumed it to be an abbreviation of malignant, further presuming malignant was the word used by the medical profession with no Thai translation.

Your right, the common word you hear for cancer is "ma-leng", but this is a classic case where the "r" is being replaced by an "l". Therefore it should be "ma-reng". Incidently, when I first heard the Thai word for cancer, I thought I heard "ma-laeng", which means "insect", getting the two vowels เ and แ confused.
