I've just received a price from a lawyer for the setting up of a WILL for my properties in Thailand - The price he quoted was 25K which I find to be a bit on the heavy side due to the fact that the prices in my home country would be less the half that.

The Lawyer is well known and respected on the Island.

Can anyone recommend a company and an estimated cost

Thanks

Boltd,

The cost of setting up a will varies, depending on lawyers.Example, straight out will say Bht 5,000.00 to administer the will after your death an extra Bht 5,000.00.What I mean by administer is walking it through all the legal hoops & court appearance, which makes it easier on your executor/beneficiary.I have had my will done here,a mirror image of my overseas will, including all costs Bht 10,000.00. But again I sress the point of how intricate & varied are your holdings, will be a dtermination of the cost. But if your will is straight forwrad eg, no need for bank/mortgage clearances,Bht 25,000 seems very high.

Unless you are considering suicide, what do you expect to have to will? "Ownership" by foreigners after 30 or 60 years is specious at best and fantasy at worst.

There is no such thing as a "joint will" with your Thai significant other (one who actually owns the land), if this is the case, and if it is just you, wonderful farang you, I have not seen anything that makes me feel confident that what I "buy" in my name now will be assigned to my heirs.

I have some pretty detailed routine experiences with final decrees and PR deeds and so on in the States, and although I don't profess to being anywhere close to an expert in Thai legal matters, I see nothing but minefields here (regardless of what "old timers" say -- no one yet has been here long enough to see if after 30 years, for instance, the land you, a foreigner bought, is "yours in perpetuity" to assign to your heirs).

The Thais will get the land back in the end, sure...unless your heirs can grease the right palms accordingly for as long as it takes.

You baffle & bamboozle me with your replies :o

Thanks, I try.

Seriously, do you really think anything you "own" here will be passed to your heirs in 30 or 60 years?

I don't.

By the way, you can create a binding will by writing on a piece of paper with a pen as long as you have a couple of witnessess sign it (with contact info). Unless you want to pay for someone to translate it into Thai, you can make a will right now for free.
