Do I Have To Paint A Wall White Before Painting It?

Featured Replies

I would use primer as well, white or tinted.

I have found that the best covering primer is Sherwin-Williams Pro Block.

Every time I have used it it has always covered very well, even darker colors.

Ask a question then answer it yourself. A novel approach. Saves a lot of time waiting for replies I guess.

How did you find Sherwin Williams Paint in Thailand? It is made under License by the company that for 80 years has made ECO-PAINT but normally an architect or major builder would buy this made in Thailand Sherwin Williams paint from the Bangkok headquarters.

If you have questions you might phone Jane at 081-616-2636 or her office at 02-221-7163 and then press 0. Some lines of Sherwin Williams paint have scored well in Consumer Reports Magazine testing in America, but this paint brand is not "market price" for Thailand. Jane will e-mail to you the paint specifications and you can compare Sherwin Williams paint specs to other "International" brand paint "lines" manufactured and sold in Thailand.

In our experience, the rendering on our CPAC block walls was over 30 days "cured". and one coat of ICI DULUX "Superprimer" was a good base for TWO coats of ICI DULUX paint. We did not have to do one coat of white paint first. But on some random project my nephew used an "ATM brand" primer and the color of the material bled through, so it was painted again with ICI DULUX SUPERPRIMER and the one pail of ATM brand primer was given to the Village relatives. ANY paint in the Village is appreciated.

If the original poster has questions about preparation Sherwin Williams has good information at

When painting a wall you would use an emulsion - emulsion is emulsion is emulsion (no primers for emulsion)

Using oil based (alkyd) paints would be a total f*** up!

In asking and answering his own question, the PO has omitted the most important piece of information: what is the material to be painted--- wood? concrete? plaster? Your painting method depends on the substrate. Duh.

I think there are several schools of thought on Primers and paint for Interior or exterior for new masonry or DRYWALL material WALLS. For our NEW house construction I e-mailed to several major famous brands of paint sold in Thailand and compared the recommendations of paint lines and paint types they e-mailed back. The ICI DULIX WEATHERSHIELD SUPER PRIMER we were recommended is 100% Acrylic Resins. In Thailand I think getting written advise in English from the technical departments of the major paint companies could be a good starting point before walking into a local paint shop. I think keeping a CLOSE eye on the thinning of paint by your painters and the selection of paint rollers and brushes is crucial. To make sure they use a "drop cloth" is an accomplishment in Thailand.
