Vespas,viadkas & Kruschev

In the distant past of early 1951 when Vespas were new and the USSR was ruled by the Party with Kruschev as it's head, a lot of "wool" ( read "bull" ) was being pulled over the Russian people's eyes.

A small number of Vespas were on the road in that country.

Having previously owned a Vespa I believed I could pick one.

There were emphatic denials from the locals when I mentioned that the vehicles were Italian Vespas .

No (Nyet !) they were not. They were Ruske Viadkas !!

No stomach to argue in a country with express trains to the gulags!

But that was then.

It was so long ago that the decades became blurred. The above tale relates to 1961 - not 1951. Sorry !

Reading about the Vespa exhibition yesterday brought the memory (even if faltering !) back to me.

Cheers
