America is a country formed, established and founded on lies, destruction, death, rape, pillage and exploitation of all the races that have populated it, red, black, yellow, brown and white. This type of governance trickles down to the present and will continue on into the future. There are plenty of resources to find this information. One of my favorites is 'A People's History of the United States,' by Howard Zinn, a decorated WWII pilot and historian. The Founding Fathers were not nice guys.

Thailand is happy place for US exiles :o .

isn't it nice to be bad

Well you shouldn't cry over being attacked then.

No americans realise that you "reap what you sow"...?

O yeah only half of you do..... maybe.

For the rest of the world you just come over a s plain arrogant.

After a few years in a foreign country it gets better though .

Canada and US will be one country one day  :D

What makes you think that Canadians will let the US join Canada anyway. We don't just give every Tom, Dick and Harry, free Medicare and low cost Prescription drugs and anyway few of you speak our two official languages (neither of which is Spanish). We don't have some outragious deficet here either in the worlds largest country and we already own about 50% of the mobile homes in Florida in the winter months... :D

I'm quite sure Canooks would gladly get rid of Quebec! :o

America is loved- everytime somone goes to McDonalds, drink a coke or enjoy countless other American products. All rubbish- Thai's don't give a flying f&*& about American policies in the world. :D

It is now common knowledge the degree of Anti-Americanism that is exhibited throughout the world.People I know who live in London and Switzerland are all complaining how bad it is and they want to leave.

Is this as prevelant in Thailand as it is in the UK,Europe, etc.?

Hope I won't have to wear all black and a Canadian flag to not appear American.

The terror bombiongs in Bali were aimed at Americans though Australians were the unintended victims.Do Aussies,Euros, etc.,have to worry about looking American?

No anti-american/british in Thailand- very supportive. Land of Smiles intl politics is secondary to national politics. :o

I havent seen any negativism you speak of anywhere in Europe or Asia as a matter of fact its been the direct opposite. Would I go waving your flag around and advertising that you are from a western country, prob not. I wouldnt do that regardless since we are from western countries and all targets of nutters wherever you might travel in the world.

Oh you should visit Greece.... When the twin towers fell there were Greeks watching it on the news in the staffroom... and CHEERING! The 'general' feeling amoung our 1,500 staff was 'it serves them right' and 'Good'! I was shocked and disgusted.

I was on holiday in Greece until 9/10 that year. I didnt see any anti-american sentiments and we had quite a few yanks in our toure group. I did notice most Greeks in general wanted to relocate to America. (quite odd for people hating a place so much)

As the only super-power, anti-americanism goes with the territory.

Go back a few years to when the U.K. was a world power and see how beloved they were around the world. There is no doubt of the damage a colonial power does. The U.S. is so considered today, but is it really colonialism, or a projection of power in an attempt to liberate people from oppresive regimes?

For those who hate America for invading Iraq and freeing the people from the reign of Saddam Hussein, never own up to their role in allowing his atrocities and their beign neglect of the people of that nation. What about the German and French governments who were in-bed with Saddam and making millions while Iragiis suffered. Why should one be surprised when those countries oppose invasion. Ask Germany and France what the alternative was and the answer is another ten years of sactions and broken resolutions while their busineses prospered.

Those same America haters are neutral on the Sudan, Bosnia and other areas of conflict where racial cleansing still goes on.

It is a basic law of physics that every action has a equal and opposite re-action. Thus, everytime the U.S. takes action to remedy wrong, the re-action is to be expected and I think the days when the U.S. used to bend over backwards to curry the favor of former world powers in Europe is over.

How easily the American haters ignore what is happening in Afghanistan. Another country invaded for nefarious purposes and for plunder of its vast natural resources, especially its opium????

The Thai people, many of whom have been educated in the U.S., have a high opinion of American people. Just as many of us in Thaivisa have a high opinion of Thai people, whithout that regard transferring over to the countries current government. As most have posted previously, more that 50 million Americans tried to oust the current U.S. government, this poster being one of them.

Thailand is following the U.S. in its drift to the right and all of the worrying consequences thereof. This political shift, and Australians may think it is happening there as well, speaks toward future international aggression and denial of human rights.

I haven't really detected any overt anti-Americanism in LOS. As someone else mentioned, I think we are all just one big blob of farangs. When something is mentioned to me, it's done in good-natured jest or solidarity, when they already know that I hate George W.

A lot of Thai academics or social critics will blame every social dysfunction on America or the amorphous "West," but they have been playing this type of ahistorical blame-game for awhile.

A bit like the folks who live in the blue zone on the last electoral map of the USA....!

I don't really understand what you mean by this comment. People in the blue zone voted against George W. New York is a blue state, and I can tell you that our percentage of people against George Bush is higher than the global percentage.

BUT..... U S Citizens masquerading as Canadian Citizens is akin to being a spy.

Kinda serious aintcha?

And,no,I surely don't want to be a Canadian eh?Unfortunately most Americans consider Canada as just a cold northern US state filled with plaid-wearing furry-hats-with-ears wearing hicks.

It is just an old ruse ugly American tourists use when travelling in Europe.

I think Canada is a beautiful country, with great people. I feel bad about a lot of our foreign policy, but especially towards Canada because it receives so little attention. But I do not say that I am Canadian. I really try to be honest about where I'm from, because that is how I aim to get through the world - as who I am.

Mbkudu, I agree with you here about Howard Zinn's book and most of your analysis. That has been the backbone of my own political view until I actually started living elsewhere in the world. Then I learned more of the world's history, including the domestic issues of other countries. The result? The basic analysis of my own country - America - has not changed, because you cannot change facts. However, I have a global perspective of America in the world, and believe me, we are not the only, nor the worse, violators. Does this opinion make me unpopular? I don't know. I would like to say that I don't care, but I do. But I tend to favor historical fact more than popularity.

:D Thanks Tornado. Yes, I'm single, but I think I'm single because I know exactly what I want :D

Thanks for the compliment (I would post one of those red-faced, little-heart icons but this educated lady is still technically dysfunctional :o

Anyway, sorry for the distraction everyone. Just a little good-natured diversions.

I can't believe I missed this topic.

Are Thais anti-American? Hardly. A farang is a farang no matter where you come from. I'd say Thais form opinions about Asian farangs but classify all non-Asians as one more-or-less indistinct group. We are likely judged by the actions of millions of tourists who flock here each year...how lucky we expats are!

I'm not surprised that some American tourists would sport the Cdn flag, though, I'm sure this is a very small minority of American passport holders.

Most Canadians look past the current American regime and have nothing but respect for our North American cousins. No two nations in this world are more similar than ours. Sure, we get frustrated by protectionist trade policies, aggressive foreign policy and by the Bill O'Reilleys and Rush Limbaughs, but we are willing to disagree and look past our differences (hopefully).

Sweeping generalisations are the brain-farts of the ignorant and misinformed. Most of the American-haters out there have likely never visited the U.S. and interacted with them in the comfort of their own society. Once doing this, the naysayers would not judge the American people by the actions of political cowboys and corporate sluts, but by their mostly polite and friendly people.

However, the fact that half the population voted for Bush doesn't really help that too much.

Cheers.

Hardly.. half our history and 1/4 of our population is there.

As much as Quebec sometimes is a right pain in the butt they probably have the most interesting history of discovery in North America. Ever noticed how many lakes, roads and towns in the eastern US have French names?

Dunno had a chance to visit Quebec and they were extremely anti-canadian. They consider themselves french, and the proper french laff at them.  :o

All the French in Canada are not just in Quebec, there are large areas across the country. Quebecers aren't anti-Canadian they are Pro-Distinct-French-Society, there is a difference even if it is subtle.

I was married to a lady from Montreal for a long time and I really never figured out what they want. A lot of the ill feeling started during and after WW2 when the English really felt they had opted out and would not help, even the Free French they would not support. After the war there were a lot of ill feelings as Canada switched it's multiculturalism immigration policy from Europe to Asian based, and groups like the FLQ were formed. Fortunately that period in Canadian history is over but bad blood still boils to the top especially in predominantly French speaking areas. Some of this is also fueled by the church but that another matter.

My view, and I'm no expert, that the French in Quebec feel their culture is threatened. This may, or may not, be the case depending on what your upbringing is. I live in a small West Coast town and i can send my kids to a Government French language school, and 3 of my mandatory TV channels are French; so I don't think that they have a lot to worry about.

Last year I visited Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Australia and Korea and experienced none of the anit-Americanism claimed by many on this forum. I've been in and out of these countries numerous times in the past 25 years and have never, ever been afraid to claim I hold an American passport. Truth be told the only place I experience this sort of negative banter is on internet chat forums. Perhaps this medium lends itself to less guarded opinions.

Only those who don't have a clue about what's going on would say that the Quebecers consider themselves French. They consider themselves 'Quebecois', as well as (Most of them) 'Canadien'. Quebecois is nearly far enough from european french to be classified as it's own language, along with acadian and metis dialects, the other major variations of Canadian french.

Sorry to throw cold water on your in-depth vacation, but I've had almost 4 decades of experience dealing with this subject.

The definite Anti-American sentiment is there. It is not directed to the individuals, although they may suffer from it in some cases.

I is even not directed to the population in general.

It is directed to the policies of the USA past and present. The unstated (it may even be stated somewhere by somebody) overall policy is to dominate in all aspects of life. It is the arrogance of a government that feels it can impose its beliefs on the rest of the world. That it can do as its like, commits whatever atrocities unscated and rejects by action and word human rights and civil liberties, not accepting any critique however constructive intended.
