I'm not sure if the Customs guys come under the Commerce Ministry's supervision, but some of us already have first hand experience of them sizing up how much (cough, cough) "import duty" to try and demand - all according to what car you arrived in. 4-year old SUV in my case - Buddha help me if it had been a late-model Merc............... Not to worry - Abba will fix it............. just not in the lifetime of anyone reading this. "Frank Admission" Award + 1 Not in this life time? baht&sold Posted December 23, 2008 Share Posted December 23, 2008 It's unfortunate PM Abhisit has made a few controversial choices such as the otherwise capable foreign minister (forever tainted by his ridiculous comments regarding the airports protests) and also having to heed to some less than desirable choices in other cabinet posts such as the 'massage Minister' (as demanded by the ex-Thaksin/Newin camp). Thankfully, very capable Finance Minister Korn will oversee the Commerce Minister and take the larger economic helm along with Abhisit. Ultimately, the Govt realises it must get up and functioning to take on some daunting tasks asap and will have to pick a better time to tackle the long-standing and ever-damaging quota system. Unlike past Govt's, at least Abhisit discussed the proposed ministers with the Federation of Thai Industries first and openly admitted/lamented shortcomings (resulting from the allocation by party-quota system). The quota system has made for laughable MP's in the past such as the ex-deputy finance minister who didn't know what value-added tax was but was then promoted to Information Communication Technology Minister... (there are many more examples, too little time to go into) Then of course you have loyalty rewards in the form of Chalerm heading up Health (mostly defending the Chinese from melamine fall-out and proposing various alcohol bans). Not to mention his son appointed to fight social ills... and the list goes on and on. The Cabinet party-quota system has to go of course but for the moment, Thailand has to get going again first. PS: Square-faced 'Santa' may be landing again on Thursday rumour has it... 'IF' so, not spurned on by reindeer, rather grinches one suspects... We have actual not heard ANYTHING about her other possible qualifications. We heard only about here former job, and it's perceived un-acceptability as a job history for this job. Fair and Balanced. They they disband any parteis and bar any individuals that my stop their man getting the PM job. When they finally get him in place, he has no power and is beholden to the very people they have been trying to get rid of this past 10 years ie, friends of Newin and a Mamasan of a massage parlour. Anybody that has ever been to Bangkok will know what goes on in there. Then we should all sit back and give them a chance. You are whisitling in the wind if you think this is going to just go away. Like Samark was given a chance? Like Somchai was given a chance? Whoever has a story regarding her will be selling it now to the tabloids so its unlikely to appear on here for the time being. Your post also smacks of desperation as you try to hid it in an item from the palace hoping that this will deflect critisism from your simplistic take on it. In this case it does appear that Abhisit is seeking a cabinet that does not owe Thaksin so when (if) he returns he can't snap his fingers and watch members of the current government switch sides. Get butts in the seats that won't screw you as soon as the fugitive phones them. Yes sadly you can't throw out 'The System' before you can get things moving. And Mark MUST get things moving with whomever he can place in chairs. AS LONG AS HE MAINTAINS CONTROL over them. And not the last regimes pulling strings more. We may not see the logic and we may HATE some of the players for logical reasons from our backgrounds vs theirs. But there seems to be some logic at play, besides just doing coalition favors. The worst Ministers will be discretely controlled through their Minsitry's via the boss's back channel demands. And a little spying on them too. And by Boss I mean Abhisit. A Bit of Thai 'Yes. Porntiwa said that she is not working alone, but has a team of experts with plenty of experience and expertise in business administration behind her. Another woman in the new Cabinet is Ranongrak Suwanchawee from the Puea Pandin Party, who is the ICT minister. Her husband Pairoj - a veteran politician and executive of the now defunct Thai Rak Thai Party who was banned from politics for five years - sent her and their son to contest the Nakorn Ratchasima seats under the Puea Pandin Party. MP Porntiwa Nakasai Santi Wilassakdanon, the President of the Federation of Thai Industries, said that although the private sector was not happy with some of the Cabinet members, he was personally not concerned because having Abhisit as the head of the economic team will help restore confidence.
