Gravelrash
Bangkok Post Business leaders have expressed disappointment with Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's proposed cabinet team and are calling for him to adjust it to win the private sector's confidence. After meeting with Mr Abhisit yesterday, Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) chairman Pramon Suthivong said that cabinet members ''must not be rookies''. ''We understand the new government is formed by a coalition. But in the current critical economic situation, people who will be handling economic ministries must be professionally accepted, competent and knowledgeable,'' he said. Mr Pramon singled out the Industry and Commerce ministries as particular areas for concern. Local media have speculated that the post of commerce minister would go to Pornthiwa Nakasai of the small coalition partner Phum Jai Thai while the post of industry minister would go to Charnchai Chairungruang of coalition partner Puea Pandin. Ranongrak Suwanchawee, also of Puea Pandin, is tipped as information and communications technology minister. Experience appears lacking in all three nominations, with Mrs Pornthiwa's background including running the Poseidon massage parlour in Bangkok and Lt Ranongrak, who previously served as deputy finance minister, trained as a nurse. Mr Pramon said the commerce and industry ministers should have a knowledge and experience in business, trading and industry.

zink
If she is a "Mrs" then she is a mamasan and not papasan! I have heard that Poseidon is an overpriced establishment which also applies a hefty farang surcharge. So we can expect new commerce minister to continue to purchase overpriced goods with taxpayers money while making life difficult for farang businesses? brahmburgers
When I was new to Thailand, I unwittingly went to Poseidon. I had no experience with such things, but was trying to parlay some action. I asked how much. The people behind the check-in counter asked how much I had in my wallet. I counted out 66 US dollars. They said that's enough. I got serviced. How does that relate to this thread? I'm not sure, but with biz tactics like that, the Commerce Ministry people might ask (when someone owes taxes, biz license fees, pay a fine, customs duty, etc.) "how much in your bank account?." You tell them. They then say, "that's how much you owe." Edited December 23, 2008 by brahmburgers
pete_r
Another argument for "new politics" instead of the current system. This is new politics already. In theory, wise people appointing wise people. In practice, friends appointing friends; family members appointing family members. I might believe this new politics when someone finds a fail-proof system to check the decisions of the wise people... Maybe a group of self-appointed super-wise people? MyphuketLife
Another argument for "new politics" instead of the current system. Its such a shame that all the country has been through with the PAD to get their man in, only to find out that the PAD's man is more of the same.... barky
Different clowns, same circus. Absolutely agree. And to think Thai people get offended and maybe embarrassed when it is indicated that among other things, THEIR country is known all around the world as a "prostitute hub". Well, it is, and that's a fact that they seem set to perpetuate with this sort of decission. A pimp for a minister??? What a joke! Same s**t, different bucket. Plus
"New politics" is not about wise men appointing other wise men, it's about selecting MPs on the basis of their occupation/social group instead of geographical location. One benefit - the old feudal network will be left out in the cold 'cos it's still geography based. Evnetually Thais will find a way to corrupt the "new politics" system as well but I hope the country would get at least a few years repreive. Actually quote based government selection is not addressed in "new politics", that's something that should be dealt with anyway.

animatic
The gene pool of available minds in the political sphere is too small to support many great thinkers, so those that CAN think, get unavoidably hamstrung with those that can't for organizational reasons. She maybe a pimp, but I would say she knows how businesses run. Posiedon is one of the big zoot operations with a international clientel. Many who like a more discrete rest stop. I'll give her some points for political horse trading to get in this far. If I compare her to Chalerm... hmmm she smells more roses. A little. Yes no doubt to farangs it seems madness, but TIT. Wasn't you guys against everything and everyone but special against PAD that guys whos was telling many times that you had to be convicted to first? And now telling opposit?! Nor Chuvit or Porntiwa were convicted of any crime in the past! They're innocent people until now! And special Chuvit was investigated a lot and the officialos haven't found anything wrongdoing by him. Same is and would be happen by Porntiwa! Even you guy's would noty accepting to be named a crime suspect because you're not convicted. How you can take the right to tell that about other people, about people yopu know from Media only and what's reported?! According to the letter and book of law, all of you who're telling such story and naming people to be suspect of crime, are the one who breaked the law with that speaks already, openly on an open forum. Luckly all of you having an Cyber-Name! Have a nice day and do n ot forget that tyhere ia a cyber crime police as well!

I'm not sure if the Customs guys come under the Commerce Ministry's supervision, but some of us already have first hand experience of them sizing up how much (cough, cough) "import duty" to try and demand - all according to what car you arrived in. 4-year old SUV in my case - Buddha help me if it had been a late-model Merc............... Not to worry - Abba will fix it............. just not in the lifetime of anyone reading this.
