Hi ,, a question for any motorheads out there ,,, l have a 9year old ,, 2.8 litre turbo Isuzu (diesel),,, is 2,000 short of 200,000K,s on the clock ,,, it has blown a head gasket ,,,, is that a common problem for that model ????? ,,,,,,, l would have thought it could get to 250.000 before l had problems of that sort ,,,,, any thoughts appreciated ..

cheers

I don't think that is a common problem at all. My guess is that the engine was run hot for one reason or another.

Thanks Gary ,,,, but no ,,, she has never run hot ,,, never had any problems at all with her ,,, always serviced regularly ,,, l am not totally naive about the mechanical side of things (but certainly no expert) , l keep an eye and ear on her pulse ,, maybe she didn't like the 1,000 plus k trip to Khorat last weekend ,,,, l agree with you that it should not be a common problem ,,,, thanks for the opinion

Had one myself with the 2.8 turbo, and it died on me after 22 years and 871.200 absolutely real kilometres.

Like Gary a said, it is not a common problem for these engines, absolutely not, but these things happen .

They are easy to fix, it is a pretty straight 4 cylinder, with almost everything easy to reach.

Hi Carib ,,, thanks for the good news , if l get half that many K's l will be as happy as a pig in sh*t ,,,,,, l was going to tackle it myself ,,, but dont have enough tools for the job ,, and just had the village carman around ,, he quoted about 1400Bt (which l think he meant only for the gasket , but who knows) ,, he will get the job with me looking over his shoulder ,,,, thanks again cheers

That price is probably about right for the gasket and labor. A friend of mine has an old Mitsubishi turbo diesel and he replaced the head gasket twice before he took my advice and had the head shaved (milled flat).

I had a citreon blow a head gasket and was told that it is ESSENTIAL that the head is milled before the new gasket is fitted as when the head was overheated the head would have warped out of true shape.

I have confirmed this with 4 garages and they all said we will never fit a new gasket without milling the head first.

Don't go down the cheap route of just replacing the gasket or you will be back to replace the whole head very soon.

Good Luck :o

thanks for the replies guys ,,, l did think about shaving the head but l am sure that could not be done here ,,, also the engine never overheated at all ,, it wasn't even low on oil ( well nid noy ) she was just serviced and l wondered why she was down a tad ,, so l went looking,, l think l just picked it up at the perfect time ( if there is one) ,,, so l think l will take the chance on it being ok ,,, and if it blows again then it will get a close shave and l will be back online so you can say "l told you so" :o ,,, the guy seems to know what he is doing ,,, so l will put a bit of trust in him ,,,,,,,,, at least he has a tension wrench ,, l was afraid he might use a socket bar and a big bit of pipe to tighten the head bolts ,,, thanks again

just an update ,,,, my grease monkey (my respect for him is growing , he has gone from carman to grease monkey ,,, by the time l get the car back l might be calling him a mechanic ) advises me to get the head and block shaved ,,, so it will be done , he still reckons that it is common with the "dragon eyes " model ,,,, so to Gary and Don ,, l am about to go and bake some humble pie ,,,,,, l dont know why l keep thinking l know more than my peers ,,,,time has proven to me over and over again that l dont ,,, :o

:oEgg please do not say sorry to me I know nothing about cars except what garages tell me. I have had my latest car for almost a year and still don't know how to open the bonnet. I just listen to what my Thai wife tells me.

I have a full set of Encylopedias for sale. Reason for sale : Wife knows everything!

:D Good Luck and happy motoring.
