Thailand's self-proclaimed 'Scorpion Queen' created a new world record by holding a live 18-centimetre scorpion in her mouth for more than two minutes.

Kanchana Kaetkaew, 39, made her record attempt in front of a crowd at a shopping mall in Pattaya.

She held the poisonous arachnid in her mouth for two minutes and three seconds before spitting it out.

Kanchana then went on to begin her second world record attempt, entering a glass compound where she hopes to stay for 33 days and nights along with 5,000 scorpions in order to beat her record of 32 days set in 2002.

In 2006 Kanchana hit the headlines when she married the country's 'Centipede King'.

From ABC News Australia, just in, this link may dissapear.

Which mall is hosting this cultural highlight?

I don't think she'll last 32 days.

Only 5,000 scorpions. All she'd have to do is eat an average of 7 per hour, and she'd run out in less than 30 days !

Mmmmmm, fried scorpions in soy sauce.........hard to resist............

(I think that cage is going to stink pretty bad after just a couple of days too) :o

Scorpion lady takes it in the mouth.

There are visitors to Pattaya who are sometimes amazed at what some ladies will put in their mouths. Onlookers at the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum in the Royal Garden Plaza watched on Tuesday as 39-year-old Khun Kanchana decided to attempt a weird world record by letting her husband place a live scorpion in her mouth, and see just how long she could keep it there. Khun Kanchana managed to keep the poisonous creature in her mouth for two minutes and three seconds, a world record. The scorpion appeared not to have suffered any serious trauma. Back in 2002 Khun Kanchana set a record of 32 days in a glass house with 3,400 scorpions and has since been known as the Scorpion Queen to some, and just plain crazy to others. Her husband Khun Boonthawee, is called the Centipede King after he spent 28 days locked up with 1,000 centipedes. It’s a match made in insect heaven. Dinner parties at their place must be interesting. The Scorpion Queen is now embarking on an ambitious attempt to break her record by spending the next 33 days and nights in the company of 5,000 scorpions. A medical team from Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital will be on hand to monitor her physical condition throughout the stay. Her husband is probably off looking for a few centipedes to warm his lonely nights.

I once knew a girl with a scorpion tattoo on her ankle that did the same, but that's a different story.

Well she did it. Another record for Thailand's Scorpion Queen !

THAI "SCORPION QUEEN" NONG NA SETS NEW WORLD RECORD

ON 24th January Thaland‘s famous "Scorpion Queen" set a new world record at Pattaya‘s Ripley‘s Believe It Or Not! museum by living with 5000 scorpions in a glass enclosure for 33 days, beating her previous record by one day.

The event was marked by a ceremony at 2:00 pm at the museum in the Royal Garden Plaza in Pattaya, attended by Mr. Itthipol Khun-pluem, Pattaya City mayor, Mr. Niti Kong-grut, director of Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT), Central Region 3, Pattaya, Mr. Somporn Naksuetrong, general manager of Ripley's Believe It Or Not! together with reporters and a crowd of witnesses.

Kanchana Kaetkaew or Nong Na, dressed in a white dress, smiled after emerging from the 12 sq. meter room where she ate and slept with 5,000 venomous scorpions.

Miss Kanchana, 39, said she had been bitten 13 times on her arms, legs and fingers but a medical team from Bangkok-Pattaya Hospital had checked her physical condition and given her the all clear.

The Thai "Scorpion Queen" received 100,000 BT, two round trip plane tickets to Samui and a certificate from The Guinness World Record.

Kanjana smiled and proudly told the audience that breaking this record had been her dream for years, especially when she had set a new world record by holding a live scorpion in her mouth for more than two minutes.

She also explained that all the 5000 scorpions had been brought from Samui and they were all "Elephant Scorpions" [Asian forest scorpion or Black scorpion] which had been considered the most venomous and mysterious of a total of 1200 species. She said that living for 10 years with scorpions had enabled her body to tolerate the venom.

"I'll be back anytime if someone tried to challenge me with a new record" she said with a big smile on her face while holding her husband's hand, the "Centipede King", and posing for the cameras.
