Anyone with a knowledge of football Thai? Can you give me the low down for some vocab.

Things like players positions, goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, striker. And any other useful vocab that would help me in following the commentary on tv. That's television, not thai visa.

Thanks

Dear Bhoydy,

From your question about football, eventhough I am not a fanatic fan of football but I know some of it :o

Goalkeeper ( poo-rak-sa-bpra-dtoo) ผู้รักษาประตู

Defender ( gong-lang) กองหลัง

Midfielder ( gong- glaang) กองกลาง

Stirker ( gong-naa or soon-naa) กองหน้า / ศูนย์หน้า

Free kick ( joot-toht-nork-ket) จุดโทษนอกเขต

Peanalty kick ( dte-look-toht or joot-toht) แตะลูกโทษ / จุดโทษ

Corner kick (look-dte-moom) ลูกแตะมุม

Referee (gam-ma-gaan or poo-dtat-sin) กรรมการ / ผู้ตัดสิน

Lineman (poo-gam-gap-sen) ผู้กำกับเส้น

Yellow card ( bai-leuang) ใบเหลือง

Red Card ( bai-daeng) ใบแดง

I hope it will be useful for you, next time when you watch football so you have some idea from Thai commentators.

Nice Day,

"Free kick ( joot-toht-nork-ket) จุดโทษนอกเขต". Please help us understand this. The Thai appears to say "the penalty area". Does this imply the area where the kick occurs or the act of kicking itself?

Thanks

I suspect this is below the level you are at. But on spokenthai.com, they have a football sports video along with a transcript and vocabulary list.

http://www.spokenthai.com/sports-news/sports-news-001.html

From the cited webpage: "ช่วงทดเวลาบาดเจ็บ". What is the English expression?

Maybe it is something to do with adding injury time on at the end of the half. ทด - to carry (a number) and เวลา - time, is to carry the time on for the period that the player was injured - บาดเจ็บ

That's an educated guess, feel free to add to or take away from my thoughts

One common one is "Lum nah." This is the word for offside. When the player is not offside or they are expressing they think it was not offside, they will say "Mai lum."

Edit: I see you already know that, and added it in Thai script no less. I assume if you know Thai script, you can just use a dictionary from now on :o .

เขตโทษ penalty area

กระเด้ง bounce

ปั่น spin, although i think in football context we use curve or curl more than spin

David's quite right ทดเวลา is the equivalent of "time added on" and บาดเจ็บ is 'injury'. So: 'time added on for injury' as the great John Motson would have it. I did a post on my blog about this kind of vocab during the world cup. Enjoy
