Has anyone on here had their wife deported from the UK back to Thailand because she has failed the NEW UK citizenship test ?? I am not on about the first test which was prior to April 2007 to this new nie on impossible test they have to take now.. My wife is struggling after many hours of study to get much more than 30% in the test results ,,,,when the minimum pass mark is 75% ,,its not as if she is some thicko as she has 7 university degrees and is a schoolteacher,,,,,,,,how the hel_l they can expect anyone to memorise over 3000 non sensicle obsolete facts about percentages of things that went on in world war 1,,I will never know or understand what use to our wives lives in the UK this serves.. I dont know anyone in the UK that has lived here all their lives that can pass it ,, let alone anyone from the other side of the world..

If anyone knows anyowhere we can go to pay a few quid under the counter to get one of these poxy bits of toilet paper to allow our UK legally married wives to live with us , please let us know as I am sure many people on here are gonna come up to this problem very soon,,,,,,,,,cheers all

The more i find about the visa applications and after it the more stupid it comes. How stupid is it that these tests exist. i mean i see African and Pakistani families coming to my country and claiming of the state whilst we working class get shit on basically whilst we go through all the stress of getting our wifes here and then find out about this stupid test. Do other nations need to take this test? argh it makes me soo angry

If her English is not of a sufficient standard to understand the study materials and the test then she can enrol on an ESOL with citizenship course instead.

Johndoarung, the Africans and Pakistanis you dislike so much are subject to the same immigration rules and visa requirements as a Thai, including the prohibition on public funds. In fact anyone from outside the EEA who wishes to settle in the UK has to apply for a visa, live in the UK for the required time and take this test before they can obtain ILR.

7 uni degrees, she should be in Parliment !! must be getting on in years then, my daughter took 5 years to get a masters degree in Pharmacy [with letters after her name] , so with only 1 degree, perhaps she will be kicked out of UK soon, although she is UK born & bred to make way for your mrs? Yeah right! let them show the money like we have to in Thailand,

:D sorry to hear of your problem.

My Thai wife passed her L.I.T.UK test this year and has just had her Citizen application confirmed (£755 :o )

She used the Life in the UK site to do many dummy run tests and she also borrowed a CD which you can load onto Computer which has all the Q and A

and will give you random 24 question tests. Just as the test computers in test centres do.

Yes I agree the questions are stupid and compiled by a Government nerd but if your wife keeps at it she will pass. :D

Slightly off topic when my wife took the test she used her Thai passport as ID at the test centre. Her passport had been updated/extended for another 10 years whilst last in Thailand and the surname changed to her marrried name.

The test centre would not accept this as true ID as her picture and her new married name on passport did not appear on the same page. (They quoted some government rule).

They let her sit the test and we then had to send pass certificate and passport off for verification.

Good luck with your search for under the counter certificate but I think you will find the test results from test centres are transmitted to IMMIGRATION DEPT and test cert numbers are tracked when applications for things like passports etc are sent by your wife.

Best to do it the right way, rather than find yourself waving goodbye to your wife at T3 LHR, as she is given a one way flight to LOS. :D Good luck.

it does not matter which way you do it (and i agree that the esol course would be better for your wife) you are going to get screwed into parting with money, with the amount of money they give to people outside of the uk, they need to get it from other places and yes you guessed it from you, i know how you feel my wife is thai we have 2 children together, came back to live here for my childrens education and future and i am british and i think the test is nigh on impossible for us never mind our wives, so i guess we will have to keep parting with our

£700 each year, but if we die they can claim it then, how sad this is :o

Why would one complain about their significant other having to meet minimum requirements in order to become a citizen of their country? I know, its about the money but that's why they charge so much, so it is taken seriously. If it were only 50 Brit Pounds there wouldn't be any complaining. In the long run it is in the best interest of the applicant to understand the culture, laws and more importantly...the language. That's the whole point.

In the USA we have the same types of requirements. My Thai wife and I practiced her English for almost 8 years and then I spent hours and hours studying with her for the citizenship test...which she passed and is now an American citizen. Most Americans probably couldn't pass their citizenship test without studying either. Obviously more language work and pre-test study is needed instead of complaining.

If only Thailand had the same (more easily achievable) opportunity for us......think about it and then realize how lucky your wife is to have the opportunity that you and I do not in return.

I think your glass is half full but you see it as half empty.

Good Luck!

This is the general feeling amongst many of us johnoarung, but the gov sees the need to put a pathetic test in place, none of us would know many of the answers, and what relevence to modern day living,ie allegience to queen if your a republican in a "free"democracy,....many of us are afraid to put it as boldly as you but the feeling is shared,.....

understood,....but I think what the resentment is about,....is in past decades, the immigration policies of previous goverments was widely abused,....ie,...arranged marriages to obtain visa,s/passports,...by certain groupings,...people coming here for financial rather than relationship reasons,...the Gov was so overwhelmed that they hve had to put strict immigration laws in place,......hence resentment!!......"the dishonest spoiling it for the honest",......not racist!

These qualifications are to avoid paying the metoikion of £350 a year.

If your wife/GF isnt from a british comonwealth country, stop moaning and go by the book, its your choice, not the UK embassy.

Commonwealth citizens are not exempt. I believe the target is actually Pakistanis - other nationalities just get caught up in it.

I simply do not understand why any one would object to immigrants having to learn the language of the country they are living in. It is also, I feel, important to learn something of the history, culture and traditions of the host country, and of course one's rights and responsibilities.

Although I accept that some of the questions do not appear very relevent, the major scandal, in my humble opinion, isn't that immigrants have to pass this test, but that many Brits couldn't!

dam_n good idea to have a means test.we all complain about immigrants come into uk and live in one area and make it a slum, with many that cant even speak decent english.you cant have it both ways.wish thailand would do the same for us farangs,as the thais have it easy compared to us expats.

no corrupt police to deal with, less maniacs on the road, you get the gist???

If there is a gap in achievement, there are other routes.

to this new nie on impossible test they have to take now

That is an opinion, which differs to mine.

how the hel_l they can expect anyone to memorise over 3000

It is only a certain amount of chapters, I can't remember how many off hand, but a little research would bear fruit, it is also multiple choice, so you can generally eliminate certain questions, in each task and have a bash at the remaining left, if you have done the hard yards and read and practised hard, it does get easier, or if there is still a gap in achievement, you may decide to choose another route, for example moving from one Esol grade to a higher one after assessment.

Good Luck

Best not, but a more reasoned outlook would be good.

You can.

Absolutely

A good post in its entirety Martian, but for brevity, I have just quoted part.

Looking at the work my step-son had to do to gain his degree at a Thai university compared to that required for some of the ridiculous degree subjects in a UK one, I would say that a Thai degree certainly is different; it's harder!

That your wife has studied for and obtained even one degree from any university means that studying for the LitUK test should be a breeze for her; provided her English is up to it. If it isn't, then there is the alternative route.

I know many Thai women from poor backgrounds with little previous formal education who have managed to either pass the test or advance one level on an ESOL with citizenship course, so to be honest I cannot understand why your wife, especially with her previous education, is finding it so difficult.

Hi Good morning to all!

I am new to the site and from the look of things, have a lot to learn!

So, may I ask 'where do I get the info on ESOL with citizenship from'?

Your comments thus far have been a great help, so keep up the good work and many thanks, Sam

My daughter has reliably informed me that if your mrs wants to make use of her 7 degrees in the UK she will have to go to an english uni, to get the UK equivalant, and if her english isnt up to scratch, she will have to take a lanuage course first, which of course will help her with the Life in UK test, have a look at this site, http://offices.exeter.ac.uk/international/.../Thailand.shtml and there are many others to choose from..

Would be interesting for you to post what degrees she has, then other members can help you evaluate them in regards of what use they are in UK.

Daughter with her one [dismal] masters degree in pharmacy is only on 55k UKP a year for a 37 hour week, she has to freelance at weekends at 35quid an hour to make ends meet,

When you meet your GF in thai, wasnt she working as a primary school teacher? and couldnt remember certain things that happened 8 years ago?

Yep, Super Member with a very good memory!
