Blinq Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 One of the things that surprised me while I was in Phuket mid-December was the complete lack of mosquitos. I only ever saw one and that seemed more interested in my green chicken curry than in me. I'd gone to the trouble of using about half my airline liquid quota on mosquito repellant because I usually become their 'dish of the day' whenever they spot me, but on this occasion I didn't have to use any of it. Back at home, a mozzie net is essential as is coating my bod is repellant from April to November. Some of the buggers even manage to survive until Christmas in spite of temperatures dropping to 7C and I've often regretted taking down my king size mozzie net too early. Do they usually take a vacation in December?
G54 Posted January 2, 2009 Posted January 2, 2009 I've had a few around the house of late, but none have seemed that interested in my 'Farang' blood supply. Normally they bypass everyone else and make a bee line for me. 2 bites in 4 weeks! A record for me. The g/f had half a dozen bites this week, though not from my house. Seems there are a few about but not with the same attitude as at other times of the year. Maybe they are feeling the chill
londonthai Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 in bangkok I am bitten 5-10 each evening/night, despite nets and closing doors in the late afternoon. I burn as well a mosquito coil at the back of my house, where they do breed. Just 3 days ago I got a "racket" electric zapper. Will have to cover all the wholes around the window frames or even buy an electronic zapper

Do they usually take a vacation in December? Why do you bring mosquito repellant with you? It's cheap enough to buy here!
samgrowth Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 After the recent problem in Thailand (PAD, Swampy, Thaksin, etc) Even the mozzie stay away.
thaimate Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 i dont know what it is about me ,but i never ever get bitten, whats wrong ,is there something even my best friend isnt telling me?
tw25rw Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I got bitten heaps in December in Bangkok and Patong. My gf gave me some ointment with eucalyptus oil and camphor which works well and soothing the itching.
dumball Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 Apparently , mosquitoes detect you with infra-red 'Eyes' , then home in you by your breath , tell you something ? Incidentally , they do not bite , they 'Suck' . Another interesting point , the buzzing you hear is when they are trying to attract a mate , when they find one they syncronoise thier buzzing , it takes the male about 2 secomds , the females take a lot longer . Does this remind you somewhat of humans in a bar ?
pattaya_girl Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 I live in Pattaya, and there seems to be more than ever in my area than usual. The other night I was horified, i went out in the garden to see my Miniature Doberman and i could not see her face, the whole of her poor little head and face was covered in Mosquito's, covered completely. I have had to bring her inside until they cool off a bit.
girlx Posted January 3, 2009 Posted January 3, 2009 i very rarely get bitten by mosquitos, but my friends get chomped all around me. you might just be one of those people who don't notice them because you are immune to them. supposedly eating a lot of garlic and chilis helps.
Blinq Posted January 3, 2009 Author Posted January 3, 2009 That's weird then if they are around. I brought a ton of repellant with me on doctor's advice. He seemed to think the stuff you get in Thailand wasn't up to European standards and since reports were flowing in at the time about the risk of catching Dengue, he advised me to take a supply with me. But as I say, I ended up taking it all back home with me again without using any of it. Maybe it was the lack of Marmite in my system? I usually eat jars and jars of the stuff at home, but didn't eat any at all when I was over there because I couldn't find any decent bread anywhere.
sassienie Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 Up here in Chiang Mai, most of the mossies leave about November and go on vacation to Bangkok. Except one, who seems to have had a grudge against me since the time I moved here. This is one nasty looking bitch, she has a scar over it`s left eye, thick jagged stripes along it`s body. Anyway, it`s become personal now and I`ll get the bugger eventually.
QED Posted January 4, 2009 Posted January 4, 2009 I live in Pattaya, and there seems to be more than ever in my area than usual. Same here. We have all the doors and windows open all day, then when we close up the house at dusk I do a sweep with twin tennis bat zappers. Normally I might get 3 or 4, the last week or so it's been more like 15-20, yesterday was the record at 26. Maybe they are all on holiday in Pattaya as the weather is a bit warmer?

He seemed to think the stuff you get in Thailand Hi, if they were aerosols, how did you get them past the security vigilantes? I had to leave $250 worth behind, in storage.
