Posting the number and upgrading it, just MIGHT save a few lives.

No, it won't. Here's why:

The girls HAVE TO GO WITH MEN WHO ARE DRUNK. They can't and don't turn away a "fare," most of the time, and Samui (as in other places in Thailand) foster drinking to excess. I haven't lived in the West in over 20 years, but are there bars/clubs there that open and serve alcohol until 5am? I don't think so.

I have always said that places like Fusion host people who are already intoxicated, often very much so. It's the bar where you go to have one (or more) too many.

In practical terms, the way things are is the way they are going to be. Just look out for yourself.

I do look out for myself, but the problem is others don't, and crash in to me or others! :o

I agree with you Jens that information never hurts. And if you only wake up one person, and save one life, it is still worth it.

It is strange, that most of these people, (i myself included very much when i was a tourist and sadly still to some level i guess), in their home country they would never even consider for a millisecond to drive drunk. Or without helmet. Or proper gear. For the love of god, some of these people wouldn´t even consider driving a bike! Never done it and zero education on it.

Then they come here and completely loose up on their own rules. I don´t know if it´s a bit of "it´s legal so it can´t be dangerous" thinking? ( i know it is not leagal, but the lack of police doing their job can easily give that impression). Most European countries nowadays are pretty tighten up on these issues. Government "think" for you. If it´s legal it´s not dangerous. Almost. But here you have to think for yourself and if you are stupid enough to sit on a bike when you are really drunk, most lightly nobody will stop you. Except maybe god, hopefully without you killing anybody.

I guess it wouldnt hurt if the travel-agents or insurance companies over in Europe did a small information campain and got peoples eyes open. It is dangerous and people do die. Don´t beleive anything else.

I also think that if the police report cites the driver of the bike as being at fault, the family of the deceased girl should demand and receive compensation from the family of the foreigner who was driving.

very easy to put up sensationalist photos, fact is no tourist thinks about the awful things that may happen while they are on holiday, samui is a great holiday destination but shitty for residents, i'm meeting my parents there next month what picture do you want me to paint?

Demand & ultimately receive money from Farang Land ??

I doubt it, maybe if the Guy had Life Insurance but if he doesn't, who are they gonna claim from realistically ??

Brother, Cousin, Sister, Mum, Dad or just any Member of the Family ??

Don't really think this " demanding " Money bit is the way to go about things but we're in Thailand & Money rules..

If other Posts are correct that the Foreigner leaves a Wife & unborn Baby, then that's obviously an issue too & who i feel sorry for..

Such a shame when anyone is injured/killed. Maybe a lesson to be learnt about drink driving...IT KILLS...laws in the western world were introduced 40 years ago because of fatalities... lets be grateful she didnt maim or kill an innoncent person through her shelfish stupidty

and the man on the bike deserved it? Silence would be your best option methinks.

I doubt if either actually deserved it however drink driving, if this particular case was drink driving related as people would assume given the description by the OP, is always gonna be a touchy & emotional subject for some that should be respected, even if you don't like what they're saying..

who says the taxi driver was sober ???

OK, I just finished chatting with the family of the girl at the memorial shrine at Wat Lamai.

Here is what the family was told; you can decide who is at fault:

There was what I understand to be a garbage truck stopped on the road at Buddy's, facing south (toward Lamai). Apparently, the vehicle was mostly in the left lane and had not pulled onto the shoulder (it was pretty early in the morning, after all. The time of death was 6:40am (the near exact time of sunrise), but when the actual accident occurred would have been somewhat earlier, presumably.).

A car driven by a Thai who had delivered food or produce to some place (resort?) in Chaweng was returning to Lamai.

When the car driver came to the truck stopped in his lane, he made to pass it on the right, not realizing that the motorcycle was just coming up to the garbage truck itself in the opposite lane.

Impact.

The Thai driver did not flee the scene and the police have his particulars; however, discussions ensued about possible compensation from the car driver and as of now, he cannot be located.

The understanding was that both people on the motorbike were "very drunk," but also that they did not swerve into oncoming traffic, as I was earlier led to believe.

I don't think the delivery car driver had been drinking. However, at that time of the morning, it may be presumed that he was not driving slowly.

As heavy as this loss is for some friends and relatives is, it is plain stupid to go blind drunk, little drunk, whatever, intoxicated and ride a bike or drive a car around in these conditions here!

Just think about it....back home many don't do because they are aware of the consequences!

Here the consequences are simply different!

BAR OWNERS should much more participate and WARN punters about the dangerous situation, take possession of the keys, insist that a Taxi is taken - OFFER such service!

Not to mention "back home" many bartenders can be jailed for serving drinks to intoxicated patrons. Usually in the case of a road death the police check the facts leading up to the accident taking statements etc. & laws are in place forcing bar owners NOT to serve drunken customers.

We can only hope. I feel for the girl & her family.

Attended the ceremony at Wat Lamai. I was surprised at the end that it was a brief, open casket affair just before the box was put in the crematorium. It seemed very, very unreal. A difficult afternoon.

I just got off the phone with a girl who told me that a lady working in (Name Deleted) Bar in Lamai was allegedly drunk on a rental bike with a man who had paid bar for her and who was involved in an accident with a taxi in which both the girl and the man were killed. This was last night somewhere in the Lamai environs.

When I asked for details, I was told that she was only telling me because she knew that I was friends with the girl and that the other girls are not talking about this with foreigners. The reasons for the bargirls not talking about this fatality and the circumstances are not important, but I was wondering if anyone has any solid information about this.

It's a real sad thing...the girl in question was a good kid at heart but was desperate for attention and drank heavily until morning nearly every night.

I knew her fairly well and by all accounts, it was a foolish and squanderous way to die.

yes im afraid it was true i live 10 m from where the car hit them,it was on the wrong side of the road, overtaking a garbage truck, the thai bar girl was taking a ferang customer, the guy who also died had a 7 months pregnant girlfriend and was a (up to then)a decent guy too.i spoke to his friends.he lived for 5 min then passed away, she was killed instantly, the driver ran away ,but was caught the next day.the ambulance was there in 2 min but nothing could be done,it was a very loud crash at 430 in the morning.if you need more info **phone number removed per forum rules***

no i dont think so they were 1m from their left hand side of the road,it was the drivers fault 100% he overtook and into the path of the poor people on the motorbike.accident was at 430 am-and i didnt see the driver at the scene either.nobody wanted to help though -reflects badly on thai people when it comes to other people suffering

also im sure she was driving his motorbike

this is hearsay, but correlates to MWolfe.

crash wa s as described.

driver fled but was later found and paid 50,000 baht fine.

==================================

50,000 THB Fine ??

To who ??

How sad, 1,000 GBP, 1,500 USD or 50,000 THB is the " fine " for i'd assume, costing two lives..

If he wasn't to blame, then why would he have to pay a fine ??

All good ideas in theory but very, very unlikely to happen in reality..

I know.... but if one thinks about the consequences, the price is simply way too high!

Bar owners could hang up a couple of pics combined with some data and it should be much more publicized... awareness it's all that it needs, not to mention common sense.

Just last night 3 boys (locals) speeding down beach rd. chaweng...nearly drove into the rear of a song teaow, the screeching tyres made every one turn their heads - while the kids, were all smiles!

Ridiculous isn't it ??

I do wonder about the Boys that we see that think they're Valentino Rossi..

I wonder if they do it to impress or just do it because they're so bored mentaly ( i believe for some, riding Motorbikes fast is all they seem to enjoy doing ) or are just plain stupid & have little or no consideration for others ??

Or a mixture of all of the above possibly..

Now if there where some race tracks and other things for the youth to do, this wouldn't happen so often. It's up to the lasy local goverment to do something. But that seems far off.

This Island has truely hit it's all time low.

Young boys everywhere on the world like to drive fast and reckless. But in most countries parents/teachers/police do restrain them, to save their lives! Nobody seems to care here.

SO why not here? :o Nobody REALLY cares? Well I for one. I don't want a kid killing me or my loved ones! Send your letters to the local gov. and or newspapers, to wake them up!

You answered your own question...

Longtom said the Teachers/Police etc to restarin them to save thier Lives, here we only worry that their recklessness doesn't harm us or our immediate Friends/Family, & rightly so of course, but that doesn't help get the the root of the problem..

Authority & discipline, or lack of, is a major issue on this Island & when you regular see Kids under 12 yaers old flying about on Bikes, seriously, what hope is there for these Roads to be safe ??

Add that to the elder Teens/early 20's with the mentality of normal 12 years Olds who sadly want to be Valentino Rossi, Tourists who have never ridden a Motorbike before & most who probably don't even drive on the left hand side of the Road, & it's no wonder these Roads on this Island are so <deleted> dangerous..

& of course, we haven't then mentioned the Cement Truck Drivers who think they're Michael Schumacher who drive the most recklessly out of everyone who, if they do have an accident, just dissapear in to thin air anyway...

Totally agree with you, but we need to put heat on the authorities to patrol the roads, etc., instead of stopping at resorts/cafes and getting their free food and drink, and never givin' a sh't 'bout drunk drivers or speeders.

Just trying to keep this topic warm. If all expats here wrote in, then there MIGHT be done something, it's worth a try, for what it's worth. Have lost too many friends to traffic on Samui. Man, it's for everyones own sake!!! :D

Young boys speeding on bikes had nothing to do with this accident. Nor did the abysmal road conditions.

I wonder if the driver of the bike, whoever it was, was sober if the collision would have been avoided since one is usually much more self-aware on a bike, at night, when one has all is faculties working.

It's a mute point, I know, but one that has crossed my mind.

I am also wondering why a poster felt that the girl was driving the bike and not the man. I am not sure how this could be determined without a witness, unless this is what the driver of the car said, but who on Thaivisa has access to that sort of information?

I heard this also, and was informed from the police on this one..

i said that because i was the first on the scene and could see the layout of the accident.also i dont think even if they were less drunk, they could have avoided the accident-they had no where to turn to-either a parked car or a head on-no choice really-even if they were sober but tired.very sad though.waste of 2 lives-oi still 100% blaim the thai driver of the car.wrong side of the road-he caused the accident.
