Issan Dictionary

Featured Replies

I have googled Issan, Isarn Isaan dictionary, I have searched this site - so I have done the basic research

I would love to know more than a couple of phrases

I am wondering if anyone knows any new sources or if old sources have been updated

Might be worth re-posting in the Issan local forum.

Also enter the words in your post, saves having then to ask what the phrase is, etc.

Good luck,

frank

You might wish to see what the Royal Institute Dictionary shows as Issan words.

1. Go to http://rirs3.royin.go.th/dictionary.asp

2. In the entry box toward the bottom where it says, "ค้นคำศัพท์ตามความหมายจากทุกกลุ่มอักษร", enter "อีสาน" or copy and paste "อีสาน" into this box and hit "enter".

Under each letter of the alphabet you will see a list of words which the RID authors have labeled "ถิ่น-อีสาน" or "local words from the Northeast". Be aware that this is not a comprehensive list of all Issan words in the language, as others have pointed out before.

Good luck!

Apparently coming soon, but been coming soon for 2 years I think! But maybe if you go on the mailing list will get information if/when available

Just stumbled across this thread......very useful insight...I've been scratching my head for a while about the Lao - Issan connection...the simple BAW replacing MAI happens a lot and has now convinced me that I am sane after all!!!!...makes a lot more sense now I know I am learning traditional Thai, and my friends are speaking an alternative language!!! I kind of sussed it out a bit when I kept hearing 'yang' and 'eng'!!! But then that could be Khmer!!! :D Deep breath...have another beer!!

So a big thank you to the Op and the other contributors :o
