Protecting My Garden From Snakes

Recommended Posts

It's called Ta Krai Hom

Taller and coarser than the eating variety.

If anybody sees any in Chiang Mai for sale please let me know as the clump I planted seems to have been ingested in the spread of bamboo clumps.

Its meant to keep away mosquitoes, not sure about snakes.

my neighbour swears by Salae Pang Porn which is prickly and has reddish markings on the leaves, grows into big bush as a snake deterrent.

Thanks for the naming - I'd already forgotten it. Just sent you a PM with Khamtien stockist's phone numbers. If any other CM residents want the same information, just PM me - though it generally needs to be ordered.

I'm not quite sure what all these "fear and loathing of snakes" stories are doing in a forum entitled "Pets", but just for the record, I've just posted a fifteen-point list of snake tips under the other snake heading: General Topics > Snakes.

The Citrus thing is an old wives tale. I've seen snakes hiding in lemongrass more than once. The Kids went for a trip with school on friday, a walk in the Hills. We had a tick list of items needed, one was a lemon for each kid to keep snakes away. What utter bullSh*t.

If the Dogs are active then your unlikely to get snakes settling anywhere near, but there's nothing to stop a snake popping in as it passes by.

If you can afford to support another Dog get a soi dog that has some 'Thai ridgeback' in its makeup. It'll find the snake before your pedigree does. next best thing to a mongoose ;-)

Have looked into snake repellents especially in Australia..seems there is little can be done except prevention by sealing potential homes and keeping the area food free ie no rats etc...

In N. Queensland we had a Malamute/shepherd cross which always killed the snakes which came out of the gully beside the beach.

Interestingly enough here in Thailand we have several Soi ridgeback style doggies which do get upset at the plethora of reptiles around our house on the farm. However they never attack the snakes just yap and bark and chase 'em out of the lemon grass and around the citrus trees. LOL

We still get lots of snakes..one was about 5/6 metres and thick as the wifes' thigh (a little thigh..lol). Just have to live with 'em and carry a big stick......

I noticed the same thing the other day - my 'soi dog' was barking v aggressively, so I went out to find out what on earth was going on! (It was so much more aggressive than her normal 'there are people coming close to the house' bark) Much to my suprise there was a v long snake (no idea what it was) slithering along the border to my land!

You don't need a ridgeback type dog - any 'soi dog' will give you the warning bark. But only, if course, if they see them!

In my experience lemongrass doesn't work with tree and rat snakes - but perhaps it does with cobras. I've got lots of tree and rat snakes, but haven't seen a cobra here. (Touch wood and fingers crossed desperately!!)

We bought some at Khamtieng Market and it didn't work. We put a couple of them on the front porch and it didn't make a dent in the mosquito population at all. After about 4 months they suddenly turned brown and died.

i think walling your property in with sufficient high enough wall, cutting all grass etc short inside and also outside the wall, closing all gaps, esp at doors and gates, making sure no mice or frogs around and also cut off tree branches hanging over your wall will help a lot. if you got debris, burn it in heaps outside your property, will also chase away snakes.

I agree with all of the above but I don't see how it is possible to keep the frogs away. I chase the frogs out every day that I find residing in my garden, only to find that they or their relatives have returned during the night.

We've had a python visit the outside of the house and as a result have had to keep our two puppies inside the house. A fully grown Reticulated python can eat a Alsation dog. As for high walls. Our snake visitor climbs through the trees and then onto the telephone cables and lowers himself down onto the ground. I guess you would have to have a high concrete wall with no trees around the wall to keep them out.
