If you have not done this yet try defragging in Safe Mode. Which file system do you use? FAT32, NTFS? You will find the page file in the systems properties (right click "my computer - properties". But you should try a 3rd party defrag program as well. Most will give you a trial period. Edited January 18, 2009 by webfact

Another try: Boot into (safe mode) and and start COMMAND Mode. CMD Type defrag C: -a (ENTER) to analyze the HD. Type defrag C: -f (ENTER) to force defrag even if space is low on HD. another guess I have you might want to scan for virus/rootkit/trojan. some Trojans will cause "Disk defragment could not start" Edited January 18, 2009 by webfact

jaccson
Ok as stated i open my defrag and click c drive then analyze, message box opens and says ,Disk defragment could not start.same goes for drive D,E,F, anyone who could 1,tell me why this has happend (it was ok 2weeks ago) 2, how to fix it (please) Many thanks Colino Some common reasons why you cant run a defrag are- Programs interrupting its function (try running it in safe mode or turn off programs that are running) Disk errors, (run chkdsk before defrag) Lack of free space (The built in defragmenter needs atleast 15% free space, you can run a diskcleanup to free up room). I'd however suggest installing a third party tool like Diskeeper, which has many advantages like real time background defrag, low free space defrag and a nice GUI. Try the free 30 day trial version.
